Nigerian singer Adedamola Adefolahan, aka Fireboy DML, grew up in Abeokuta, Ogun State, and became interested in pursuing a music career while studying at Obafemi Awolowo University.
2018-2019: Breakthrough
"Jealous", his breakthrough single, first appeared on Nigerian record label YBNL Nation's collaborative album YBNL Mafia Family (2018), two months after he signed to the label. The song went on to be re-released in March 2019 and was nominated in several categories at the 2019 City People Music Awards, winning one award – the City People Music Awards Most Promising Act of the Year (2019). "What If I Say", his follow-up, was released on June 14 and a third single, "King", was released on August 1.
2019-present: Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, Apollo, and continued success
Laughter, Tears and Goosebumps, Fireboy DML’s debut album, was released on November 29, 2019, and amassed over 6 million streams on Spotify three days after its release. The day before the release, he released the visuals for the track "Scatter". On January 13, 2020, Fireboy DML released the music video for "Need You" and on February 10, 2020, he released the visuals for "Vibration".
In August 2020, he released the tracklist to his upcoming second album, Apollo. Apollo was released on August 20 and received acclaim from Pitchfork (including an 8.3 rating out of 10) and NotJustOk.
In 2021, Fireboy DML released the single "Peru," and was featured on Ladipoe's hit "Running," WSTRN's single "Be My Guest", and Cheque's single "History." 2021 also saw his debut appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, where he performed a medley of the songs "Vibration," from Tears, Laughter and Goosebumps, and "Champion," from Apollo.
