ABOUT WISIN & YANDEL

Wisin & Yandel met in Cayey, Puerto Rico in the late-1990s and formed a musical duo, performing reggaeton.

CAREER

1998-2004: Beginnings

The duo made their debut on the 1998 album No Fear 3, produced by DJ Dicky and that year also featured on the compilation album La Misión Vol. 1 by Fresh Productions label. The compilation album was a success, gaining gold certification, and off the back of its success the label produced Wisin & Yandel’s debut album,  Los Reyes del Nuevo Milenio, which hit number 35 on the Top Latin Albums chart.

The album served as their breakthrough, paving the way for three consecutive gold albums. Their sophomore effort, De Nuevos a Viejos, was released in 2001 and peaked at number 12 on the Latin Pop chart and number 26 on the Top Latin Albums chart, also receiving a nomination for a Latin Billboard Music Award. The following year, they received the Tu Música Award for Best Rap/Reggaeton Duo in 2002. In 2003 they released Mi Vida...My Life, which reached number 19 on the Latin Pop chart. This was followed by 2004’s De Otra Manera. That same year, the two artists released solo albums:  El Sobreviviente by Wisin and Quien Contra Mí by Yandel.

2005-2006: Pa’l Mundo and WY Records

In 2005, the duo released their first album on their own label, WY Records. The album, Pa’l Mundo, launched the singles "Rakata," "Llamé Pa' Verte (Bailando Sexy)," and "Noche de Sexo", which were all top five hits on the U.S. Billboard Hot Latin Tracks chart. Pa'l Mundo debuted number thirty on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. It also reached the Top 10 in Venezuela, Chile, and the Dominican Republic, and charted in China and Japan, as well as some European countries. It placed at number seven in Billboard Top Latin Albums of the decade 2000s.

Following the success of Pa’l Mundo, Wisin & Yandel released the collaborative album Los Vaqueros in 2006, which features other artists from WY Records, including Gadiel, Franco "El Gorila", Yomille Omar "El Tio", and Tony Dize with guest appearances by Don Omar, Gallego and Hector "El Father". Certified double-platinum by the RIAA, it reached number 44 on the Billboard 200, number two on the Top Latin Albums chart, and number one on the Latin Rhythm Albums chart. It was also nominated for a Lo Nuestro Award for Urban Album of the Year.

2007-2012: International success

November 2007 brought the release of Wisin vs. Yandel: Los Extraterrestres, which features collaborations with international artists like Eve and Fat Joe. It debuted at number 14 on Billboard 200, hit number one on Billboard’s Top Latin Albums and Latin Rhythm Albums charts, reached number one on the Venezuelan Albums chart and reached the top 10 in Chile and Ecuador. It was the top-selling Latin album of 2008 in the US and sold more than 1.5 million copies worldwide, making it one of the best-selling reggaeton albums of all time. It won the Latin Grammy Award for Best Urban Music Album and Lo Nuestro Award for Urban Album of the Year. Throughout 2008, they promoted the album on the Wisin vs. Yandel: Los Extraterrestres, Otra Dimensión tour.

On April 24, 2009, Wisin & Yandel won the Latin Rhythm Album of the Year, Duo or Group Latin Billboard Music Award for Los Extraterresres. The following month, Wisin & Yandel released their sixth studio album, La Revolución, which features guest appearances from 50 Cent, Ivy Queen, Yaviah, Ednita Nazario, and Yomo. It hit number seven on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Latin Albums chart. That October, the duo won the Latin American MTV Awards for "Artist of the Year" and "Video of the Year". La Revolución won the Latin Music Award for Latin Rhythm Album of the Year at the 2010 Latin Billboard Music Awards. To promote the album, they embarked upon La Revolución Tour.

In January 2011, the duo released Los Vaqueros 2: El Regreso. It features collaborations with several artists on WY Records as well as T-Pain, 50 Cent, and Sean Kingston. The album hit number one in Mexico, as well as on the Billboard Top Latin Albums and Latin Rhythm Albums charts. It debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 and reached number two on the Top Rap Albums chart.

In July 2012, their eighth studio album, Líderes, was released. It features guest appearances from Chris Brown, T-Pain, Jennifer Lopez, O’Neill, Franco "El Gorila" and Alberto Stylee. It won the Lo Nuestro Award for Urban Album of the Year in 2012 and the Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Rhythm Album of the Year in 2013. As with their previous album, it reached number one on the Top Latin Albums and Latin Rhythm Albums charts.

2013-2017: Hiatus and solo careers

After completing the Líderes Tour in November 2013, the duo embarked upon a hiatus. Yandel’s second solo album De Líder a Leyenda was released in November 2013 and Wisin’s El Regreso del Sobreviviente was released the following March. De Líder a Leyenda was nominated for  Best Urban Music Album at the Latin Grammy Awards of 2014 and also for the 2014 Billboard Latin Music Award for Latin Rhythm Album of the Year.

On September 8, 2017, Yandel released the single "Como Antes" from his new album Update, featuring Wisin, and that November, Wisin featured Yandel and Daddy Yankee on the track "Todo Comienza en la Disco" from his album Victory.

2018-present: Reunion and new album

In February 2018, the duo announced their return from hiatus and one month later they announced a show at Madison Square Garden to celebrate their Puerto Rican heritage, taking place during the Puerto Rican Day Parade weekend in New York City. In May 2018, Wisin & Yandel announced a concert that November, taking place at the José Miguel Agrelot Coliseum in Puerto Rico. The show sold out so quickly and demand was so high that they added seven more dates, making an eight-day-run.

Los Campeones del Pueblo, Wisin and Yandel’s ninth studio album, was released on December 14, 2018. It features guest appearances from artists including Ozuna, Maluma, and Bad Bunny. The album hit number two on the Top Latin Albums chart and has been certified quadruple-platinum in the US.

In March 2022, the duo announced La Ultima Misión tour. The tour coincides with the release of a new album and will be their final tour as a duo.
