ABOUT STEVIE NICKS

American singer, songwriter, and producer Stevie Nicks was born in Phoenix, Arizona, and lived in many places throughout her youth, including Albuquerque, New Mexico; El Paso, Texas; Salt Lake City, Utah; Los Angeles; and San Francisco, due to her father’s job as executive vice-president of Greyhound. Musical since the age of four, she was gifted her first guitar aged 16 and soon wrote her first song. She spent her high school years listening to records and singing in bands. In 1967, she met Lindsey Buckingham, her future boyfriend, and she soon joined his band Fritz as the lead singer. From 1968-1970, Fritz opened for Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin on tour.

After Fritz disbanded in 1972, the duo Buckingham Nicks was formed and it was at this time that the duo also became a couple. Signed to Polydor Records, they released their eponymous self-titled debut album in 1973, but it wasn’t a commercial success and they were soon dropped from the label. Two years later, Buckingham was invited to play with Fleetwood Mac but refused to join the band without Nicks. The two joined the group and found huge success with their first album, Fleetwood Mac. SOLO CAREER

1981-1986: Bella Donna, The Wild Heart, and Rock a Little

Bella Donna, Stevie Nicks’ debut solo album, was released on July 27, 1981. The album was a critical and commercial hit – it topped the Billboard 200, launched four singles that charted on the Billboard Hot 100, and earned Nicks the title of "the Reigning Queen of Rock and Roll" from Rolling Stone magazine. The album was recorded with Sharon Celani and Lori Perry, Nicks’ permanent backing singers, who have since recorded on every one of her solo albums. That November, she embarked on the White Winged Dove Tour to promote the album, although the tour was cut short so that she could record Fleetwood Mac’s next album, Mirage.

Her second solo album, The Wild Heart, was released on June 10, 1983. The double-platinum album reached number five on the Billboard 200 and launched three hit singles: "Stand Back",  "If Anyone Falls",  and "Nightbird". The album is the first of hers to feature co-writer and vocalist Sandy Stewart. That summer, she performed at  Glen Helen Regional Park in San Bernardino, California at the second annual US Festival. She then toured North America from June through November. That December, Nicks performed  "Stand Back" and "Nightbird" as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

1984 was spent writing and recording a new solo album, titled Mirror, Mirror. However, Nicks was unhappy with the direction and the following year started from scratch. The resulting third studio album, Rock a Little, was released on November 18, 1985. It peaked at number 12 on the Billboard 200, launched three successful singles, and was certified platinum by the RIAA. She promoted the album with a tour that ran until October 1986, and also performed with Bob Dylan and Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers during their Australian tour.

1988-1996: The Other Side of the Mirror, Timespace, and Street Angel

In 1988, Nicks began working on her fourth studio album, The Other Side of the Mirror, with producer Rupert Hine. The album was released on May 11, 1989. A North American and European tour followed from August through November that year.

After a Fleetwood Mac tour in 1990, Nicks left the band due to a dispute with Mick Fleetwood, who would not allow her to use her unreleased 1977 Fleetwood Mac track "Silver Springs" on her upcoming album Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks, because of his intentions to release the song on an upcoming Fleetwood Mac box set. Timespace: The Best of Stevie Nicks was released on September 3, 1991. The album did not feature "Silver Springs," which was included on a four-disc box set, 25 Years – The Chain, the following year. Nicks rejoined the classic Rumours line-up of Fleetwood Mac to perform their song "Don't Stop" at President Bill Clinton’s 1993 inaugural gala.

Street Angel, Nicks’ fifth studio album, was recorded using previously written material throughout 1992 and 1993. It was released on May 23, 1994.

1997-2001: Enchanted and Trouble in Shangri-La

On April 28, 1998, Nicks released the box-set Enchanted, which featured liner notes from her, journal pages, and exclusive rare photographs. To support the boxset’s release, she embarked on a tour. That year, Nicks also contributed a song to the soundtrack of the film Practical Magic and also performed in Don Henley's benefit concert for the Walden Woods Project.

Throughout 1994 and 1995, whilst recovering from a Klonopin dependency, Nicks had begun writing new material. Many of these songs were recorded for her Trouble in Shangri-La album with Sheryl Crow, who produced and performed on several tracks. The album was never finished with Crow, who had to drop out due to conflicts with scheduling, but eventually, the remainder of the album was produced by John Shanks, with  David Kahne, Rick Nowels, Pierre Marchand, and Jeff Trott also contributing to production.  Natalie Maines, Sarah McLachlan, and Macy Gray were also featured as guests on the album.

Trouble in Shangri-La was released on May 1, 2001, and was responsible for reviving Nicks’ solo career. It was both a critical and commercial hit and led to a Grammy Award nomination for Best Female Vocal Performance for "Planets of the Universe". That month, Nicks was named VH1’s Artist of the Month and was featured by VH1 in a well-received Behind the Music episode, as well as a performance on an episode of the VH1 Storytellers Concert Program. Throughout 2001, she toured to promote the album.

2002-2009: Crystal Visions and The Soundstage Sessions

May 2005 saw Nicks perform five nights at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas. This was followed by a 10-date run with Don Henley called the Two Voices Tour and the Gold Dust Woman solo headlining tour that summer, where she was supported for over 20 dates by Vanessa Carlton.

In March 2007, Reprise Records released Crystal Visions – The Very Best of Stevie Nicks in the U.S. The album debuted at number 21 on the Billboard 200 albums chart and included her hits, as well as a dance remix, and one new track – a live version of Led Zeppelin's "Rock and Roll". A deluxe version was also released, featuring a DVD of all of Nicks’ music videos, alongside a commentary from Nicks and rare footage from her recording sessions of Bella Donna. She followed with a tour with Chris Isaak that began that May.

Nicks released her tenth album and first live solo album, The Soundstage Sessions, in March 2009, launching one single – a cover of "Crash Into Me" by Dave Matthews Band.

2010-2014: In Your Dreams

In 2010, having finished the Unleashed Tour with Fleetwood Mac, Nicks began recording her first solo studio album in a decade with Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart. The album, In Your Dreams, was released on May 3, 2011. Stewart also directed a critically acclaimed documentary about the making of the album. Of the album, Rolling Stone stated: "It's not just her first album in 10 years, it's her finest collection of songs since the Eighties". It became her fifth top-10 on the Billboard 200 chart, debuting at number six. In Your Dreams also debuted at number 24 on the Australian ARIA chart, number 22 in Canada, and number 14 in the UK.

In September 2011, Nicks contributed a cover of Buddy Holly's "Not Fade Away" for the tribute album Listen to Me: Buddy Holly.

March 2012 brought a guest appearance for Nicks as herself on the NBC sitcom Up All Night, where she duetted with both Maya Rudolph and Christina Applegate. An excerpt of the 1981 track "Sleeping Angel" was also featured in the show.

The In Your Dreams documentary film was released on DVD on December 3, 2013, and charted at number seven on the Billboard Top Music Video sales chart and number 29 on the UK Music Video Top 40 chart.

2014-present: 24-Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault

In 2014, Nicks played a fictionalized version of herself on the third season of the television series American Horror Story, Coven – a role she reprised in the eighth season, Apocalypse. She performed the songs "Rhiannon", "Has Anyone Ever Written Anything For You?", "Seven Wonders", and "Gypsy". May 2014 saw Nicks honored with a BMI Award and that July, she was announced as the adviser for Adam Levine's team on The Voice.

Her seventh studio album, 24-Karat Gold: Songs From The Vault, was released in September 2014. The album reached number seven on the Billboard 200 and mostly features new versions of demos that Nicks primarily recorded between 1969 and 1987.

Crystal Visions – The Very Best of Stevie Nicks was reissued on "crystal clear" transparent double vinyl in May 2015, alongside a vinyl messenger bag and a limited-edition lithograph. Nicks toured with The Pretenders on the 24-Karat Gold Tour throughout 2016 and 2017. In July 2017, she featured on the song  "Beautiful People Beautiful Problems" from Lana Del Rey’s album Lust for Life.

Nicks was elected to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2019, making her the first woman to be inducted twice: once as a member of Fleetwood Mac and once as a solo artist.

A live album and DVD of the 24-Karat Gold Tour were released in September 2020. The following month, she released "Show Them the Way" – her first new music in six years.
