ABOUT REBELUTION
Reggae rock band Rebelution was formed in Isla Vista, California in 2004. The band currently consists of Eric Rachmany, Rory Carey, Marley D. Williams, and Wesley Finley.
CAREER
2004-2007: Formation and Courage to Grow
Eric Rachmany, Matt Velasquez, Rory Carey, Marley D. Williams, and Wesley Finley met whilst studying at the University of California, Santa Barbara. The band members were all living in the college town of Isla Vista at the time. Throughout 2004 and 2005, the band played local shows, gaining a following, and self-released an EP. Meanwhile, they all graduated from UC Santa Barbara.
The band’s debut album, Courage to Grow, was released in June 2007. It acted as the group’s breakthrough, going on to be selected as iTunes Editor's Choice for Best Reggae Album of 2007 and to peak at number four on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.
That year, after the release of Courage to Grow, Velasquez, who had been one of the group’s vocalists, left due to the pressures of extensive touring.
2009: Bright Side of Life
Rebelution’s second studio album, Bright Side of Life, was released in 2009, two years after their first. Released on August 4, it topped the iTunes Reggae Albums chart and Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums chart. It also reached number 54 on the Billboard 200. Bright Side of Life was the band’s first release on their own label, 87 Music.
2012: Piece of Mind
Piece of Mind, the band’s third studio album, was released on January 10, 2012. It debuted at number 13 on the Billboard 200 chart and topped the Independent Albums and Reggae Albums charts. It also reached number four on the iTunes Albums chart. The band also released Peace of Mind: Acoustic, which features all twelve original album tracks but as stripped-down, acoustic versions, and they released Peace of Mind: Dub, which was remixed by Easy Star’s Michael Goldwasser (Dub Side of The Moon, Radiodread, Easy Star’s Lonely Hearts Dub Band).
2014: Count Me In
Their fourth studio album, Count Me In, was released on Easy Star Records and features guest appearances from Don Carlos and Collie Buddz. The album debuted at number 14 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Reggae Albums chart. To promote the album, Rebelution embarked on the Count Me In album tour, with Iration, The Green, and Stick Figure in support. Count Me In was named the best-selling reggae album of the year by Billboard in December 2014.
2016-2019: Falling Into Place and Free Reign
Falling Into Place, the band’s fifth studio album, was once again a joint venture with Easy Star Records. It debuted at number one on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart and stayed on the chart for over 60 weeks. It also reached number 32 on the Billboard 200.
In 2018, Rebelution released its sixth studio album, Free Reign, which included collaborations with acclaimed Jamaican producers Don Corleon and Winta James. The album reached number one on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums chart, as did their 2019 Vinyl Box Set.
2020: The Dub Collection
The Dub Collection was released on July 17, 2020. The album features dub versions of fan-favorite tracks from Rebelution's previous albums. It was mixed by the band’s lead touring guitarist Kyle Ahern, who previously won their "Jam With The Band" contest. The album peaked at number eight on the Billboard Top Reggae Albums chart.
2021-present: In The Moment and Live in St. Augustine
Rebelution’s seventh studio album, In the Moment, was released on June 18, 2021. It features guest appearances by Jamaican reggae artists Keznamdi, Kabaka Pyramid, and Busy Signal, American soul singer Durand Jones, and The Indications, and was produced by Kyle Ahern. The album debuted at number two on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and number 36 on the Independent Albums chart.
The band released its second live album, Live in St. Augustine, on May 20, 2022.
