About Fall Out Boy

Based in the Chicago suburb of Wilmette, Illinois, Fall Out Boy was formed in by friends Pete Wentz and Joe Trohman. Throughout the 1990s, Wentz had performed in local hardcore punk groups such as Birthright, Extinction, First Born and Racetraitor, as well the metalcore band Arma Angelus. Disillusioned with the scene, he decided to create a pop punk side project for fun, and asked Trohman to be involved. Not long after, Trohman brought Patrick Stump on board, who was the drummer for grindcore band Xgrinding processX at the time, and he became the band's vocalist and rhythm guitarist.

In its early days, the as-yet-unnamed band began performing at university shows and had not yet settled on a drummer or lead guitarist. After recording an initial rough cassette tape demo in their original drummer's basement, the band (who by this point were known as Fall Out Boy – a name given to them by Killing Tree frontman Tim McIlrath) travelled to Wisconsin to record a studio demo with 7 Angels 7 Plagues drummer Jared Logan.

In May 2002, the band released a split EP with Project Rocket whose drummer, Andy Hurley, later joined Fall Out Boy. That year, they also recorded Fall Out Boy's Evening Out with Your Girlfriend – a mini-LP that was released by Uprising Records the following year, although against the band's wishes.

Career

2003-2004: Early success and Take This to Your Grave

2003 brought talks with several record labels for the band off the back of their demo recordings, and they signed with Bob McLynn of Crush Management. The band went on to sign an "incubator deal" with Island Records who funded them to record their debut album with independent label Fueled By Ramen; a Florida-based label co-owned by Less Than Jake drummer Vinnie Fiorello that had gained noteriety when they signed Jimmy Eat World.

Take This to Your Grave, the band's debut studio album, was released in May 2003 and launched three singles, including "Grand Theft Autumn/Where Is Your Boy", which was their first song to enter a Billboard chart. The album stirred up interest for Fall Out Boy, who performed some notable shows the following summer, including South by Southwest (SXSW) and five dates on The Warped Tour. An appearance on the cover of Alternative Press that August, and play via listening stations at Hot Topic, helped increase the bands visibility further. May 2004 also brought the release of an acoustic EP/DVD combo, My Heart Will Always Be the B-Side to My Tongue.

2005-2006: From Under the Cork Tree

In May 2005, Fall Out Boy released their second studio album, From Under the Cork Tree. The record served as their breakthrough album, debuting at number nine on the Billboard 200 before peaking at number two, and certified triple-platinum by the RIAA, it became one of the "Top 100 best-selling albums of the year in the US" and one of the "Top 50 Best Selling Albums of 2005" worldwide. From Under the Cork Tree produced two Billboard Hot 100 top ten hit singles: "Sugar, We're Goin' Down" and "Dance, Dance", which were certified four-times and triple-platinum, respectively. The music video for "Dance, Dance" won the band awards for "Viewer's Choice" and "Best Group" at the 2006 MTV awards, as well as two Teen Choice Awards for "Rock Track" and "Single", and the "People's Choice: Favorite International Group" at the MuchMusic Video Awards. "Sugar, We're Goin Down" also won the band an MTV Music Video Award and the band was nominated for Best New Artist at the 2006 Grammy Awards.

Throughout 2005 and 2006, the band toured extensively and made appearances at several music festivals, as well as appearing on television on TRL and on late-night TV and music award shows. In March 2006, the band embarked upon the Black Clouds and Underdogs Tour, which was a pop punk event that comprised of 57 dates across the US, UK and Canada, and featured The All-American Rejects, Well-Known Secret, Hawthorne Heights and From First to Last.

2007: Infinity on High

Fall Out Boy's third studio album, Infinity on High, was released in February 2007 and debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, as well as reaching number one in New Zealand and peaking in the top-five in Canada, the United Kingdom, and Australia. The album was a departure from the band's previous musical direction, featuring experimentations with R&B, soul, and flamenco, and collaborations with guest artists, such as Babyface and Jay-Z. The album launched five singles, including the hit "This Ain't a Scene, It's an Arms Race", which peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100.

The band headlined the Honda Civic Tour that summer in promotion of the album, performing with +44, Cobra Starship, The Academy Is... and Paul Wall, plus support. They also headlined the Young Wild Things Tour, with Gym Class Heroes, Plain White T's, Cute Is What We Aim For and Doug as support. A live DVD recording of the band's Honda Civic Tour date at Phoenix's Cricket Pavilion, Live at Phoenix, was released in April 2008 and debuted at number one on the Billboard Music Video Sales chart. The double disc set also included a studio cover of Michael Jackson's "Beat It", which featured guitarist John Mayer and was released as a single, hitting the top 10 on the iTunes chart.

2008-2009: Folie à Deux

In 2008, the band released their most collaborative effort to date, Folie à Deux. The album was promoted by a viral campaign based around a Big Brother-type organization named "Citizens For Our Betterment", and debuted at number eight on the Billboard 200 that December. It featured guest appearances from Brendon Urie, Alexander DeLeon, William Beckett, Elvis Costello, Travis McCoy, Doug Neumann, Gabe Saporta, Lil Wayne, Alexander DeLeon and Debbie Harry. "I Don't Care", the album's lead single, peaked at number twenty-one on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified Platinum by the RIAA for shipments of one million copies. In order to promote the album, the band embarked on the Believers Never Die Tour Part Deux.

In November 2009, the band released a compilation album: Believers Never Die – Greatest Hits.

Due to both tensions in the band from recording Folie à Deux and stress from touring due to a divided fanbase in reaction to the album, Fall Out Boy played its last show at Madison Square Garden on October 4, 2009 before embarking upon an extensive hiatus. At the show, Mark Hoppus from Blink 182, who were headlining the concert, shaved Wentz's head in a symbolic gesture.

2010-2012: Hiatus and side projects

During the band's hiatus, the members pursued several different musical projects individually. In July 2010, Pete Wentz formed the band Black Cards with vocalist Bebe Rexha. They released the EP Use Your Dillusion in 2012. Wentz also write a novel, Gray, and became the host of the reality television tattoo competition show Best Ink.

Patrick Stump released his debut album, Soul Punk, in October 2011 and also worked as a professional songwriter/producer, co-writing tracks with Bruno Mars and All Time Low, in addition to pursuing work as an actor.

Andy Hurley continued to manage F*** City, his record label, and he became the drummer for the rock bands Burning Empires and Enabler, as well as forming the heavy metal supergroup The Damned Things, alongside Joe Trohman, Scott Ian and Rob Caggiano of Anthrax, and Keith Buckley of Every Time I Die.

2013-2014: Reformation and Save Rock and Roll

In early 2013, the band members reconvened and discussed returning to music together with a "reimagining of the band". That April, they released Save Rock and Roll, their fifth studio album. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and features guest vocals from Foxes, Big Sean, Courtney Love, and Elton John. The album's lead single, "My Songs Know What You Did in the Dark (Light Em Up)", was a worldwide hit and was certified triple-platinum in the US. A music video for every song on the album was released in a series titled The Young Blood Chronicles. To promote the album, the band headlined the Save Rock And Roll tour for a year and a half after the album's release, and also co-headlined the Momentour with Paramore.

2014-2016: American Beauty/American Psycho

"Centuries", the lead single from Fall Out Boy's sixth studio album, was released in September 2014. The single reached number 10 on the US Billboard Hot 100 and was certified four-times platinum by the RIAA, as well as reaching number one on the UK Rock and Metal Chart. The album, American Beauty/American Psycho, was released in January 2015 and debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200. It was certified platinum by the RIAA. That October a remix album entitled Make America Psycho Again was released with a different rapper on each song.

In April 2015, Fall Out Boy inducted Green Day into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and from June through August they with Wiz Khalifa, Hoodie Allen, and MAX on the "Boys of Zummer Tour". That October, they embarked on the American Beauty/American Psycho European tour.

2017-present: Mania

Preceded by the singles "Young and Menace", "Champion", "The Last of the Real Ones", "Hold Me Tight or Don't", and "Wilson (Expensive Mistakes)", Fall Out Boy's seventh studio album, Mania, was released in January 2018. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 and earned a Grammy Award nomination Best Rock Album at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards in 2019.

Greatest Hits: Believers Never Die – Volume Two, Fall Out Boy's second greatest hits compilation album, was released in November 2019.
