Born and raised in Bethnal Green, London to Nigerian parents, British comedian Gina Yashere began her career in comedy after working as an elevator maintenance technician and engineer.
In 1996, Yashere was a finalist in the Hackney Empire New Act of the Year competition. She made several appearances on British television, including in 2004 on the comedy series The Lenny Henry Show, where she played the characters Tanya and Mrs. Omokorede. She also made appearances on several prestigious UK TV comedy shows such as Live At The Apollo & Mock The Week.
In 2007, Yashere was featured on the reality show Last Comic Standing, auditioning in Sydney and making it to the top 10 finalists.
The following year, she made her American breakthrough, becoming the first Briton to perform on Def Comedy Jam. In September 2009, she appeared on The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien and later that fall made two appearances on The Jay Leno Show. In 2010, she worked with Leno again, appearing semi-regularly on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, in a sketch comedy series called Madame Yashere: The Surly Psychic.
2015 saw Yashere featured as a selected comic on Gotham Comedy Live and in 2016 she appeared on The Nasty Show with Artie Lange. Since 2017, she has regularly featured on Comedy Central as the British Correspondent on The Daily Show with Trevor Noah.
She is the co-creator of the comedy series Bob Hearts Ashiola, which first aired in September 2019. She also plays a supporting role in the series, which has run for three seasons.
Yashere has self-produced three separate one-hour stand-up specials: Skinny B*tch (2008, Showtime), Laughing To America (2014, Starz), & Ticking Boxes (2017, Amazon Prime), two of which are currently streaming on Netflix. Her fourth stand-up special is also streaming on Netflix as part of the second season of The Standups.
