ABOUT SNARKY PUPPY

Led by bassist Michael League, Snarky Puppy is a 19-piece improvisational jazz ensemble that was originally formed in Denton, Texas and has a revolving line-up of members.

CAREER

Snarky Puppy was formed in 2004 after League’s second year of studying at the University of North Texas. The group formed around his need for a musical outlet after not fitting into any of the school ensembles. It initially started as a 10-piece group, many of whom studied at the same university. Since then, it has become a wide-ranging international band that has seen over 40 members come and go over the years. The band’s members are affectionately known as ‘The Fam’ and there are about six core members (who performed on Snarky Puppy’s debut album, The Only Constant) that are considered to be regular members. Of the band’s members, several also play with  Erykah Badu, Marcus Miller, Justin Timberlake, Stanley Clarke, Kirk Franklin, Ari Hoenig, Roy Hargrove, David Crosby, and Snoop Dogg, among others.

League self-released the band's unofficial first album, Live at Uncommon Ground, in 2005. The Only Constant (2006), The World is Getting Smaller (2007), and Bring Us the Bright (2008) all followed as independent releases. 2010’s Tell Your Friends (the band’s fifth album) was released on Ropeadope Records. In 2012, the band released GroundUP on their new label of the same name, which is an imprint of Ropeadope Records. Family Dinner: Volume One (2013), and We Like It Here (2014) were also released on the label.

On January 26, 2014, Snarky Puppy and vocalist Lalah Hathaway won the Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance for their rendition of the Brenda Russell song "Something" from Family Dinner – Volume 1. The following May, their album Sylva debuted at number one on the Billboard magazine Heatseekers Chart, the Jazz Album chart, and the Contemporary Jazz Album chart. It went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards in 2016. Its follow-up, Cucha Vulcha (2016), also won a Grammy Award for Best Contemporary Instrumental Album in 2017.

The band’s first official live album, Live at the Royal Albert Hall, was recorded in November 2019 and released in March 2020. It won a Grammy Award for the Best Contemporary Instrumental Album at the 63rd Annual Grammy Awards in 2021.
