About Tig Notaro

Tig Notaro was born Mathilde "Tig" O'Callaghan Notaro on March 24, 1971 in Jackson, Mississippi. She lived in Pass Christian, Mississippi until kindergarten, when her family relocated to a suburb of Houston, Texas called Spring. She was nicknamed Tig by her brother when she was a child and has been known by that name for most of her life.

Growing up, Tig struggled to find her place in school and academia, failing three grades and dropping out when she was in high school. She did, however, enjoy entertaining her classmates and found solace in music, learning to play guitar. She eventually got her GED in 1990.

Career

In the mid-nineties, Tig left home for Denver, Colorado, where she worked in the music industry, managing bands under the name Tignation Productions. After a few years, her work brought her to L.A., where she tried her hand at stand-up comedy. She became known around the city for her stand-up sets, and for riding her bicyle between open mic and comedy club venues.

In 2004, she was featured on an episode of Comedy Central Presents and caught the eye of fellow comic Sarah Silverman, who cast her in a recurring role on her show The Sarah Silverman Program, which ran from 2007 through 2010. From then onwards, she has appeared in guest spots on various comedy shows, including In the Motherhood, Community, The Office, Transparent, Clarence and Fresh Off the Boat.

Alongside her frequent writing partner, Kyle Dunnigan, and fellow comedian David Huntsberger, Tig nosted the weekly comedy podcast Professor Blastoff from 2011 to 2015. The improvised and absurdist show covered a range of topics, including science, philosophy, metaphysics and humanity.

Tig's debut comedy album, Good One, was released in 2011 and reache number four on the Billboard Top Comedy Albums chart.

On July 30, 2012, Tig was diagnosed with stage two cancer in both breasts. On August 3, just four days later, she performed her regular monthly stand-up set at Largo in Los Angeles, opening the show with the line "Hello, I Have Cancer". What followed was a deeply moving and personal comedy set about her recent diagnosis. The set had been recorded for an episode of the radio show This American Life and, although she was originally hesitant to release it, Tig was pursauded to put the audio out as a comedy album by fellow comedian Louis C.K., who had been in the audience at the show and was impressed by her performance.

That year, she appeared on an episode of Conan and on a live episode of This American Life. She also wrote and starred in two episodes of Inside Amy Schumer, and she wrote and starred in a Kickstarter-funded series called Clown Service.

In 2015, she released the stand-up comedy tour documentary film Knock, Knock, It's Tig Notaro, which premiered at the 2015 South by Southwest Film Festival and aired on Showtime. That July, Netflix released a documentary film called Tig, which chronicles Notaro's attempts to become pregnant with her fiancée, Stephanie Allynne. 2015 also saw the release of her first HBO one-hour stand-up comedy special, Tig Notaro: Boyish Girl Interrupted, and her semi-autobiographical TV pilot for Amazon Video called One Mississippi, which Notaro co-wrote, produced, and starred in, was picked up by Amazon, running for two seasons.

In the spring of 2018, Tig directed a four-episode HBO special based on the podcast 2 Dope Queens, and Netflix released her second one-hour special, Happy To Be Here, that May.

At the beginning of 2019, she appeared in the second season of Star Trek: Discovery as Chief Engineer Jett Reno of the U.S.S. Hiawatha.
