ABOUT A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS

Based on the 1965 Emmy and Peabody Award-winning animated television special that was, in turn, based on the comic strip Peanuts, by Charles M. Schulz, A Charlie Brown Christmas is a stage musical about finding the true meaning of Christmas. The show features characters Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Linus, Lucy, and Sally. The stage adaptation includes all of Vince Guaraldi's music from the television special and the television script is adapted for the stage by Eric Schaeffer.

?SYNOPSIS

As Christmas approaches, the children are having fun and getting excited. However, Charlie Brown is feeling depressed about the season. As his friends ice skate, enjoy snowball fights, and exchange Christmas cards, Charlie cannot shake his low mood. Snoopy, dressed as Santa, joins in the festivities, and the children all catch snowflakes on their tongues, apart from Lucy who declares that she only eats January snow. They also build a snowman and aim at a can with their snowballs. The can is eventually toppled by Linus’ blanket. However, in spite of all the cheer around, Charlie is still down in the dumps.

Worried by his melancholy, Charlie decides to visit Lucy’s psychiatric booth and, after he pays her, she asks him what he fears. Charlie tells her that his low mood is to do with Christmas, so Lucy prescribes him involvement in the group’s annual Christmas play. He takes her advice and becomes the play’s director.

Snoopy is entering a Christmas competition and he decorates his doghouse in the hope of winning prize money, much to Charlie’s chagrin. Linus and Lucy work together to write the perfect letter to Santa Claus in order to get what they want for Christmas and Charlie helps his little sister, Sally, to do the same. This does nothing to lift Charlie’s spirits, as he is disheartened by the commercialism of it all.

During the first rehearsal of the Christmas play, things quickly get out of hand, Charlie tries to give direction, but the other children are distracted by dancing, won’t co-operate, and either fight over or complain about the parts they were handed by Lucy. Even Snoopy gets caught up in the unruliness. Disheartened, Charlie decides to try and bring “the proper mood” to the play by bringing in a Christmas tree.

Charlie and Linus go together to find a Christmas tree. Amongst all the trees, Charlie believes he’s found the perfect one for the play, although Linus is unsure. They return to the rehearsal with a sapling, to find Lucy attempting to encourage Schroeder to play Jingle Bells correctly, whilst Snoopy dances about on top of the piano. When the other children see the tree that Charlie has picked, they make fun of him and laugh at the tree. Dejected, Charlie asks if anyone can tell him the true meaning of Christmas, at which point Linus takes to the stage and recites the nativity, telling Charlie: “That’s what Christmas is all about, Charlie Brown.”

Inspired by what Linus said, Charlie decides that commercialism won’t ruin his Christmas and takes the tree home to decorate it, in order to show the others that he did pick the perfect tree, after all. However, when the little tree bends under the weight of a single ornament, Charlie gives up and walks away, frustrated and crestfallen.

What Charlie doesn’t realize is that his friends have followed him home, feeling bad for being unkind. They rally around to decorate the tree together, using decorations from the doghouse to make it festive, agreeing that it is, indeed, the perfect tree. As they begin to hum “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” together, Charlie hears them and returns to see the excellent work that Snoopy and the gang have made of his tree. Finally, Charlie Brown is happy about Christmas.
