Ángela Aguilar Álvarez was born in Los Angeles, California to Mexican-American singer-songwriter and actor Pepe Aguilar and Aneliz Álvarez-Alcala while her father was on tour. She comes from a dynasty of musicians known as "La Dinastía Aguilar"; in addition to her father’s fame, her paternal grandparents are Mexican singer-actors Antonio Aguilar and Flor Silvestre. Her brother, Leonardo Aguilar, is also a singer and has been nominated for two Latin Grammy Awards.
In 2012, at the age of nine, Aguilar released an album with her brother titled Nueva Tradición, with four songs by her and four by Leonardo. Four years later, aged 13, she was the youngest performer at the BBC 100 Women festival in Mexico City, where she commented on the male-dominated music industry and her hopes for change.
In January 2018, she joined her brother, uncle, and father for "Jaripeo Sin Fronteras," an equestrian-musical style tour.
Primero Soy Mexicana ("First I Am Mexican"), her debut solo album, was released on March 2, 2018. The album’s title was inspired by her grandmother Flor Silvestre's first film, Primero soy mexicano. It is a covers album of well-known ranchera songs previously performed by other prominent music artists such as, Lucha Villa, Rocio Durcal, and her grandmother. She performed the album's first single, "Tu Sangre en Mi Cuerpo" at the 2018 Premios Tu Mundo.
That September, at the 19th Annual Latin Grammy Awards, Aguilar was nominated for Best New Artist and her album was nominated for Best Ranchero/Mariachi Album. Her performance at the ceremony of her single "La Llorona", received a standing ovation from the audience and widespread praise from various artists including Mexican ranchera singer Vicente Fernández. That December, Primero Soy Mexicana was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Regional Mexican Music Album.
Aguilar was named the Artistic and Cultural Ambassador of Zacatecas, Mexico by Mayor Ulises Mejía Haro on April 3, 2019. The following month, she was nominated for three awards at the 2019 Premios Juventud.
That July, she released her first-ever English-language recording when she uploaded an exclusive cover performance of "Shallow" to the Recording Academy's YouTube page, with permission from Lady Gaga.
Aguilar released a tribute album to American singer, Selena, titled Baila Esta Cumbia on January 31, 2020.
