Music is universal. It can be deeply personal, affecting our mood and acting as emotional and physical catharsis. It can also be a shared experience, combatting loneliness and isolation. It is a way to relate to each other: we don’t need to understand a song’s language to feel moved by it. And yet songs can also be the vehicle for helping us through heartbreak or to express joy or any other of a myriad of emotions through a clever lyric or a well-placed crescendo. If you need to scream or shake it out, music is there. If you want to relax or be uplifted, music is there. And its benefits go way beyond purely the emotional – it has been proven that music stimulates the brain which, in turn, helps with pain relief, reducing stress.
It has been revealed by a scientific study conducted by O2 and a behavioral science expert from Goldsmith’s University that just 20 minutes at a concert resulted in a significant 21% increase in feelings of well-being. The same study also showed dramatic increases in feelings of self-worth (+25%), closeness to others (+25%), and mental stimulation (+75%). Live music increases our happiness, contentment, productivity, and self-esteem and lowers stress hormones like Cortisol, which in large quantities has been linked to an increased risk of heart disease, diabetes, and impotency. Research that accompanied the study also showed an association between frequent concert attendance and improved well-being. Whatever your age, location, or background, live music is guaranteed to enhance your experience of life – isn’t that amazing?
