ABOUT DILJIT DOSANJH

Born to a Sikh family in the village of Dosanjh Kalan in Phillaur tehsil, Jalandhar district, Punjab, India, Diljit Dosanjh is an Indian singer-songwriter, actor, film producer, and television presenter who works in Punjabi and Hindi cinema. Whilst at school, he found his love of singing through performing  Kirtan (Sikh religious music) at local gurdwaras.

CAREER

2003-2004: Ishq Da Uda Ada and Sil

Dosanjh’s debut album, Ishq Da Uda Ada, was released in 2004 with Finetone Cassettes, a division of T-Series. He was discovered by Rajinder Singh of Finetone, who helped him break into the Punjabi music industry and made the suggestion that he change the spelling of his name from Daljit to Diljit. After the album’s release, he also released a music video for its title track.

Sil, Dosanjh’s second album and the follow-up to Ishq Da Uda Ada, was released later the same year, also through Finetone.

2004-2010: More albums and singles

His third studio album, Smile, began to bring Dosanjh popularity. It was released in 2005 and launched the singles "Nachh Diyan Alran Kuwariyan" and "Paggan Pochviyan Wale." Ishq Ho Gaya (2006) and Chocolate (2008) followed. In 2009, Dosanjh released four singles – "Bhagat Singh," "No Tension," "Power of Duets" and "Dance with Me." The Next Level, his sixth studio album, was released that year. In 2010, he recorded a song for the film Mel Karade Rabba, which was lipsynced by the actor Jimmy Shergill in the film.

2011-2012: Entry in Punjabi movies and Lak 28 Kudi Da

In 2011, Dosanjh made his film debut in the lead role of The Lion of Punjab. His track "Lak 28 Kudi Da" (featuring Yo Yo Honey Singh) from the movie's soundtrack, was a major success, reaching number one on the BBC’s Official Asian Download Chart in the USA. In July of that year, he starred in his second film, Jihne Mera Dil Luteya. Dosanjh released three singles in 2011: "Catty Eyes," "Dharti" and "Chustiyan."

2012-present: Breakthrough and Bollywood career

In 2012, Dosanjh appeared on Honey Singh’s single "Goliyan" from the 2011 album International Villager. That January, he sang the song "Pee Pa Pee Pa" (featuring Priya Panchal) for the soundtrack of the Bollywood film Tere Naal Love Ho Gaya. He followed with the singles "Bodyguard" and "Miss Lonely". March 2012 saw Dosanjh release his first religious album, Sikh. In June 2012, he starred in the film Jatt & Juliet, which became one of the biggest hits in the Punjabi film industry and saw him win the PTC Punjabi Film Award for Best Actor for his role. That November, he released his ninth studio album, Back to Basics, in collaboration with UK-based Punjabi bhangra and hip hop producer Tru Skool. Their track "Kharku" won the Best Bhangra Song of the Year award at both the Brit Asia TV Music Awards, and the PTC Punjabi Music Awards.

January 2013 brought the release of his third Punjabi film, Saadi Love Story, for which he sang two songs. That April, Dosanjh made a guest appearance in the Bollywood movie Bikkar Bai Sentimental with his track "Main Fan Bhagat Singh Da". June 2013 saw the release of Jatt & Juliet 2, which he starred in and sang four songs for. That month, he also provided vocals for the track "Main Taan Aidaan Hi Nachna" from the soundtrack of the Bollywood movie Yamla Pagla Deewana 2. In August 2013, Dosanjh's music video "Proper Patola" was released on Vevo – the first Punjabi song to be released on the streaming platform. The video received over one million hits on YouTube within a fortnight of its release.

2014 saw Dosanjh star in the films  Disco Singh and  Punjab 1984. The latter won National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Punjabi.

In August 2015, he performed a duet with the singer Gurdas Maan for season four of Coke Studio @ MTV. That year, he also starred in Sardar Ji and Mukhtiar Chadha, singing in both films.

June 2016 saw Dosanjh star in his debut Hindi film, Udta Punjab, which was a commercial and critical success. Three months later, he completed filming on his second Bollywood production, Phillauri, which was released in March 2017.

In Mach 2018, he played the titular character in the Punjabi World War II drama Sajjan Singh Rangroot. He followed in 2019 with the Hindi comedy Good Newwz.

In 2020, Dosanjh starred in the social satire Suraj Pe Mangal Bhari. He also released his 11th studio album, G.O.A.T., which hit the Canadian Albums Chart and the UK Digital Downloads chart and led to Dosanjh charting on the Billboard Social 50. His twelfth studio album, Moonchild Era, also charted on the Canadian Albums chart, making him the first Indian artist to have three consecutive albums on the chart. In 2021, he made it to the Sikh 100 list. He also made his production debut with the film Honsla Rakh, which became the highest-grossing Punjabi film on its opening day.

In March 2022, Dosanjh signed with Warner Music.
