The operatic tradition is one that’s existed for many many years. It is a form of theater that combines drama and music with the use of professional singers to tell stories in ways that couldn’t be done without this unique and enduring blend of styles. It’s become a pillar of live theater and is undeniably one of the most influential styles of performance that the world has ever known.
A huge draw to this style of theater is the collaboration between elements including acting, scenery, costume design, and also often includes dance or ballet to help tell the story. These performances also make use of orchestras or smaller musical ensembles often led by a conductor. While it’s similar to musical theater and Broadway shows, the styles are considered distinct and separate. For instance, there are no spoken lines in an Opera performance. Every single moment of the action, every line, even monologues are sung. This means that opera performers have to be skilled at conveying challenging concepts on the stage while delivering harmonious lyrics written for the experience.
And this unique style of performance, while challenging, has remained an influential and important part of theater ever since it’s introduction in the 1600s. The style has grown and been honed with modern influences and technology, but it has remained consistent in it’s style, feel, and elegance. You simply cannot experience an opera story in any other way. And for this reason, Opera shows are one of the most popular and enduring styles of entertainment in the world and tickets to these events are some of the fastest selling.
