How long has Midget Wrestling been a part of professional wrestling? Because it’s actually older than you think. The format was first popular in the 1950s and 1960s when performers like Little Beaver, Lord Littlebrook, and Sky Low toured North America. These athletes competed for fame and titles, including the National Wrestling Alliance’s World Midget Championship, which was first held by Sky Low. At first, the format was still niche, but grew in popularity in the country and beyond over the next few decades, including Japan’s famous midget wrestler, Little Tokyo. The biggest period for this format took hold during the 1950s-1970s, which saw midget wrestlers, tag-teams, and women performers appearing on cards. These performers even appeared on television broadcasts for special promotions in various cities. The form began to wane after WWE's Wrestlemania III. While promotions still welcomed midget wrestlers or held midget divisions, its popularity was falling. In fact, in the 1990s, midget wrestlers were often reserved for only comical matches and segments rather than serious competition like before.
However, this wasn’t the case in Mexico. In Mexico, wrestlers such as Mascarita Sagrada continued to compete in major promotions and in AAA matches. And it’s said that these bold and charismatic performers paved the way for a resurgence in North America during the mid-2000s. Today’s midget wrestlers owe their art and prominence to these early pioneers.
