Singer-songwriter Alec Benjamin hails from Phoenix, Arizona. He was raised in Long Island, New York, and grew up listening to artists as diverse as Paul Simon and Eminem. Inspired by his father, who played guitar as a hobby, Benjamin began playing, singing, and writing songs in high school. By the time he graduated from high school, Benjamin decided to pursue music as a living.
2013-present: Career beginnings, Narrated for You, and These Two Windows
In 2013, at the age of 20, Benjamin traveled to London to work with songwriter and producer Sacha Skarbek (Lana Del Ray, Miley Cyrus), who he had met through a mutual friend. Together, they recorded his debut EP, America, which was released on White Rope Records. The strength of the release, plus his popularity in Europe where he had performed at Berlin Music Week and Reeperbahn Festival, led to a deal with Columbia Records. However, just weeks after submitting his debut album, the label dropped him. Despite this, Benjamin embarked upon a self-funded tour of Europe, opening for Marina Kaye in France and Lea in Germany. In 2014, Benjamin self-released the single "Paper Crown," whilst still attending university.
In 2016, after graduating, Benjamin released a succession of tracks: "The Water Fountain," "End of the Summer," and "I Built a Friend." Later that year, he also featured on the Jon Bellion track "New York Soul, Pt. 2," from Bellion’s album The Human Condition.
In 2017, Merrick Hanna used Benjamin's song "I Built a Friend" as the track for his contemporary dance audition in the 12th season of America's Got Talent. Later in the season, Hanna used Benjamin’s cover of "Lost Boy" by Ruth B for his live quarter-final performance.
The following year, he released the single "Let Me Down Slowly" featuring Alessia Cara, which has been certified double-platinum by the RIAA. That November, he released the album Narrated for You, which charted at number 127 on the Billboard 200 and has been certified gold. 2019 saw him release two singles with Spotify Studios NYC, including a cover of Eminem's "Stan".
These Two Windows, Benjamin’s debut album, was released by Warner Music on May 29, 2020. The album reached number 75 on the Billboard Hot 100 and launched several singles. In 2021, he released the single "Change My Clothes" with YouTuber and Twitch streamer Dream.
