Camilo Echeverry, known professionally as simply Camilo, is a Columbian singer, songwriter, and musician. Born in Mendellín, he was raised in a musical household with a vast record collection, which inspired him to become a performer. In his youth, Camilo began performing with his sister and the two auditioned for the XS Factor in 2006, but they did not reach the final.
2007-2018: Career beginnings
The following year, Camilo auditioned again for XS Factor, this time as a solo artist, and he won the competition. Upon winning, he released the single "Regálame Tu Corazón". Throughout 2008, he tried his hand at acting, appearing in the telenovelas Super Pá and En los tacones de Eva, and on the children's program Bichos. In 2010, he released the mixtape Tráfico de Sentimientos. Not long after, he decided to take a hiatus from music.
A 2015 relocation to Miami, Florida, saw Camilo begin to write songs for other artists, including "Sin Pijama" by Becky G and Natti Natasha’s, "Veneno" by Anitta, and "Ya No Tiene Novio" by Sebastian Yatra with Mau y Ricky. The latter, released in August 2018, racked up over 517 million views on Youtube by March of the following year.
2018-present: Por Primera Vez and Mis Manos
Sporting a drastic change in image, Camilo returned to his own music in 2018, releasing the song "Desconocidos" with Manuel Turizo and Mau & Ricky, which peaked at number 23 on the Billboard Latin Pop Airplay chart. The song has since been certified 11-times platinum by the RIAA (Latin). The single’s success led to a record deal with Sony Music Latin, who he signed with in February 2019. Later that month, he performed at the Venezuela Live Aid concert in Cúcuta, Colombia, a town that borders Venezuela.
"No Te Vayas", his mainstream debut single, was released on March 28, 2019. By August, the song’s video had reached more than 59 million views on Youtube. His 2019 song "La Boca" with Mau & Ricky has been certified quadruple-platinum. "Tutu", featuring Puerto Rican singer Pedro Capó, reached number two on the Latin Pop Airplay chart and has been certified 10-times platinum.
Por Primera Vez, Camilo’s debut studio album, was released on April 17, 2020 and reached number five on the Spanish and US Latin Albums charts, as well as reaching number one on the US Latin Pop Albums chart.
His follow-up, Mis Manos, was released in March 2021. The album features guest appearances from Evaluna Montaner, Mau y Ricky, El Alfa, and Los Dos Carnales. As with his previous effort, it reached the top five on the Spanish, US Latin, and US Latin Pop Albums charts.
At the 21st Annual Latin Grammy Awards, Camilo received six nominations, winning four, including the award for Best Pop Song for "Tutu". Por Primera Vez was nominated for the award for Best Latin Pop or Urban Album at the 2021 Grammy Awards and Mis Manos has been nominated in the same category at the 2022 awards.
