After creating his YouTube channel in 2013, Gray began uploading videos at 15 years old. Over time, in addition to covering the day-to-day of his small-town life in Texas, his videos began showing his art and music, with some videos in his vlog racking up over 25 million views.
2018-2019: Sunset Season
"Idle Town", Gray’s debut single, was self-released in March 2017, gaining over 14 million streams on Spotify and 12 million views on YouTube. His follow-up, "Grow", was released on September 1. The following month, Gray released the single "Generation Why" on Republic Records. Sunset Season, his debut five-track EP, was released under Republic Records on November 16, 2018, peaking at number two on the US Heatseekers Albums chart. Supported by Girl in Red, Gray embarked on a North American tour in support of the EP.
In late January 2019, Gray made his late-night television debut on Late Night with Seth Meyers. He also spent January opening for Panic! At the Disco on their Pray for the Wicked Tour.
That February, he re-released his 2016 single "The Other Side". Gray released the singles "Checkmate", "Comfort Crowd", and "Maniac" from his debut album Kid Krow between March and October 2019, as well as the non-album single "The King". That October, he embarked upon a headlining tour with support from Benee as well as American recording artist UMI. At the 2019 Shorty Awards, Gray was nominated for Best YouTube Musician and he was nominated for Breakthrough Artist at the 2019 Streamy Awards.
2020-present: Kid Krow
On January 9, 2020, Gray confirmed the hints that he was working on his debut album, announcing the title of Kid Krow and releasing the single "The Story". Two days before the album’s release, he put out the single "Wish You Were Sober" as a surprise. A sleeper hit, helped in part by going viral on TikTok, "Maniac" found success on international mainstream pop radio in early-2019, and it was certified platinum in Australia and Canada, as well as gold in the US. The song also reached number 25 on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 chart.
Kid Krow was released on March 20, 2020, and debuted at number five on the Billboard 200, as well as number one on the US Pop Albums chart and number two on the Top Album Sales chart. The release was the biggest new artist debut of 2020 in the US. Gray was predicted as a frontrunner for Best New Artist nominees at the 2021 Grammy Awards by both Forbes and Billboard in mid-2020. Gray was also named by Apple Music as an Up Next artist and they released an exclusive mini-documentary about him in April 2020.
"Heather" became Gray’s sixth single from Kid Krow after it went viral on TikTok and it also became his first to hit the Billboard Hot 100. Gray performed "Heather" on both The Late Late Show with James Corden and The Today Show in October 2020.
In 2021, between February and October, Gray released several singles: "Overdrive", "Astronomy", "People Watching" and "Telepath".
