Italian pop singer, musician and songwriter Eros Ramazzotti began playing guitar at the age of seven. As a teenager he began writing songs with his father and learned to play piano. Although he had the intention of studying at a musical conservatory, he did not pass the admissions test and so his dreams were put on hold until 1981, when he took part in a music contest, Voci Nuove di Castrocaro (New Voices of Castrocaro Terme) with his self-penned song "Rock 80," which he performed in front of several record industry representatives. Ramazzotti did not win the contest, but he reached the final and was signed by the recently launched Italian Label DDD (Drogueria di Drugolo). With his brother and mother, he moved to Milan, where they lived in the same building as the label’s offices for a time.
1982-1986: Career breakthrough
"Ad un amico" (To a Friend), his debut single, was released in 1982. Two years later, he met Renato Brioschi, who became his mentor and brought him to Sanremo Festival where his song, "Terra promessa" (Promised Land) won the Newcomers' category and was released in several European countries.
The following year, Ramazzotti took part in the Sanremo Festival again with the song "Una storia importante" (An Important Story), which went on to become a huge hit across Europe, including France where it sold a million units. The single was taken from his debut album, Cuori agitati (Troubled Hearts), which was released in January 1985 and reached number 10 on the Italian Albums chart.
Nuovi eroi (New Heroes), his second studio album, was released in 1986. It earned two platinum awards in Switzerland and was certified gold in Germany. It also reached the top spot in Italy, Switzerland, and Austria. The album’s lead single, "Adesso tu" won the 1986 San Remo Music Festival and topped the singles charts in the same three countries.
1987-1994: Establishing popularity
In 1987, following the release of his third album, In certi momenti (Sometimes), Ramazzotti embarked on a nine-month European tour. In certi momenti went gold in Germany and Platinum in Switzerland, and features a duet with Patsy Kensit, "La Luce Buona Delle Stelle" (The Good Light of the Stars). In May 1988, he released the seven-track mini-album Musica è (Music Is).
Ramazzotti’s fifth album, In ogni senso (In Every Sense), was released in April 1990, topping the Italian Albums chart and reaching number two in Germany. It went platinum in Germany and the Netherlands, and triple-platinum in Switzerland. After attracting more than two hundred journalists from around the world to the album's press conference launch in Venice, he was advised by American record producer, Clive Davis, to hold a concert at New York City’s Radio City Music Hall. He became the first Italian artist to perform at the renowned concert hall, performing before a sell-out crowd. Whilst in the US, he appeared on several TV shows, including The Tonight Show with Jay Leno and Good Morning America.
Eros in Concert, a live double-album, was released in 1991, followed by more extensive touring. After the release of Tutte storie (All Stories) in 1993, Ramazzotti he toured in Europe and 15 Latin American countries. The album reached the top five in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands, Sweden and Norway. It was certified quadruple-platinum in Switzerland, and platinum in several other countries, including the Netherlands, Sweden, Argentina and Austria. It eventually sold over five million copies worldwide, leading to a record deal with BMG International.
1995-2002: Worldwide commercial success
Ramazzotti performed Rod Stewart, Elton John and Joe Cocker at the European music festival in the summer of 1995. Dove c'è musica (Where There Is Music) was released on 13 May 1996. He first completely self-produced album, it sold six million copies worldwide. It also topped the Albums chart in six countries, including Italy and Germany.
Eros – Greatest Hits, a best of.. compilation album, was released in 1997. The album featured two new songs, "Quanto amore sei" (How Much Love Are You) and "Ancora un minuto di sole" (Just One More Minute of Sunshine), as well as reworked versions of previous hits including "Musica è" (duet with Andrea Bocelli) and "Cose Delle Vita-Can't Stop Thinking of You" as a duet with Tina Turner. It reached the top five in France, Belgium, Sweden and Finland, and topped the charts in Italy, Germany, Switzerland, Austria, the Netherlands and Norway. It was certified five-times platinum in Europe and double-platinum by the RIAA (Latin). 1997 also saw Ramazzotti awarded "Best International Male Artist of the Year" at Germany's Echo Music Awards.
The live album Eros Live was released in 1998, featuring two duets recorded during the world tour, "Cose della vita-Can't Stop Thinking of You" featuring Tina Turner, and "That's All I Need to Know-Difenderò" with Joe Cocker, which had been performed in Munich. The following year, he once again duetted with Andrea Bocelli, singing "Nel Cuore Lei" (In Your Heart) for Bocelli's album, Sogno (Dream). Later in the year, he went on to win "Best International Male Artist of the Year" at Germany's Echo Music Awards for the second year in a row.
In 2000, Ramazzotti produced the album Come fa bene l'amore (Feels good to love) by Gianni Morandi. His eighth studio album, Stilelibero (Freestyle), was released on October 30, 2000, featuring "Più che puoi", a duet with Cher. It was certified double-platinum by IFPI (Europe) and led to a European tour that included stops in several Eastern European countries including Moscow, Russia where he gave a three-day sold-out concerts at Kremlin Palace.
2003-present: Continued success
Ramazzotti’s ninth studio album, 9, was released in May 2003. Its lead single, "Un'emozione per sempre" (An Emotion Forever), was also released that May and held the number one spot on Italy's official single chart for 14 consecutive weeks. 9 also stayed at number one on Italy’s Albums chart for nine consecutive weeks. After the album’s release, he began a 100-date world tour.
Calma apparente (Apparent Calm), his tenth album, was released in October 2005 and was certified platinum in Europe within one month of its release. It features the duet hit single "I Belong to You" with Anastacia, which reached number one in several countries including Italy, Germany and Switzerland.
A second greatest hits album, e2, was released ten years after his first, Eros – Greatest Hits, on October 26, 2007. The double-album features four new songs on its first CD, in addition to 14 remastered versions of his hits, and the second CD includes re-workings of his songs, featuring duets with such as Carlos Santana, Wyclef Jean, Steve Vai, and Jon Spencer. "Non siamo soli" (We're Not Alone), a new duet with Ricky Martin, was the lead single from the album and reached the top spot in Italy, also entering the top five in Switzerland and Spain. A Spanish-language version of the song, "No estamos solos," was certified six-times platinum in Spain.
Ali e radici (Wings and Roots) was released in May 2009 with its lead single "Parla con me" ("Talk to Me") reaching number one in Italy and number eight in Switzerland. The album reached the top five in 13 albums charts around the world.
Ramazzotti’s 12th studio album, Noi, was released in November 2012, featuring duets with Andy Garcia, Nicole Scherzinger and collaborations with Club Dogo, Il Volo and Hooverphonic. Perfetto, his 13th album, followed in March 2015.
His most recent album, Vita ce n'è, was released on 23 November 2018. It topped the charts in Italy, Austria, and Switzerland and features collaborations with Alessia Cara and Luis Fonsi.
