ABOUT KEHLANI

Born in Oakland, California, Kehlani attended Oakland School for the Arts, where they initially practiced dance, particularly ballet and modern dance. They began singing after a knee injury in prevented them from going on to train as a dancer at the Juilliard School. At the age of 14, they were scouted to join the band Poplyfe.

CAREER

2009-2013: Early career with Poplyfe

Produced by former  Tony! Toni! Tone! member D'Wayne Wiggins, Poplyfe was Kehlani’s entry into the music industry, performing as lead vocalist for the group. The band auditioned for the sixth season of America's Got Talent in 2011, eventually finishing in fourth place.

Kehlani left Poplyfe after America’s Got Talent was over, due to several managerial and contractual disputes. In order to avoid being sued by their previous management, Kehlani did nothing music-related for six months after leaving the group. During this period (2012-2013), Kehlani had nowhere to live, staying on couches or in spare rooms with friends or wherever they could. That year, their senior year of high school, they moved to Los Angeles, California, with no legal guardian. Nick Cannon, who had hosted America’s Got Talent during Poplyfe’s run, called Kehlani in 2013 to discuss the possibility of them being in a rap group, which is what brought them to LA. However, they were unhappy with the direction of the group and they soon left to return to Oakland. At this point, they were so low on money that they began stealing to pay for food and rent. A few months later, Kehlani released their first solo track on SoundCloud, called "ANTISUMMERLUV," which inspired Cannon to call them again. He loved the track and on the strength of it, bought them an apartment in LA, along with studio time.

Kehlani released their first mixtape, Cloud 19, in 2014. It features guest appearances from Kyle Dion and Iamsu!. They released their second mixtape You Should Be Here on April 28, 2015, debuting at number 5 on the US Billboard's Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums. You Should Be Here features guest appearances from Chance the Rapper and BJ the Chicago Kid and was called the "year's first great R&B album" by Billboard.
