ABOUT KREWELLA

Consisting of sisters Jahan Yousaf and Yasmine Yousaf, Krewella is an EDM duo formed in Northbrook, Illinois in 2007. Krewella was initially a trio and the group’s third member, Kristopher Trindl, left the band in 2014.

Despite often drawing associations with the fictional character Cruella de Vil from 101 Dalmations, the band’s name was drawn from Jahan's misspelling of the word "cruel" when the two began writing music.

CAREER

2007-2013: Formation and career beginnings

Krewella was formed when Jahan, Yasmine, and Trindl attended Glenbrook North High School together. After several years of writing and performing together, drawing from many influences, including electro house and dubstep, the trio made the move into music full-time. All three members got the numbers "6-8-10" tattooed on themselves to commemorate June 8, 2010, the day when they agreed to give up any other potential futures to dedicate themselves to the project.

In December 2011, Krewella was signed by the newly-formed Canadian independent electronic music record label Monstercat.

The following June, the group released its debut EP, Play Hard. The EP’s second single, "Alive" peaked at number one on the US Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart, as well as charting on the US Billboard Hot 100.

That summer, the trio headlined at several EDM festivals nationally and internationally, including Ultra Music Festival, Electric Daisy Carnival, Stereosonic, Spring Awakening, Sunburn Festival, and Paradiso Festival, earning them the 2012 International Dance Music Award for "Best Breakthrough Artist."

Get Wet, Krewella’s debut album was released on September 20, 2013. The album was critically acclaimed and reached number eight on the Billboard 200, as well as number one on Billboard’s Top Electronic/Dance Albums chart. The album launched the singles "Killin' It", "Come & Get It", "Alive", "Live for the Night" (with Cash Cash) and "Enjoy the Ride". "Alive", which had been released in June 2012 as the third single from their debut EP Play Hard and was re-released in February 2013, reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 – their highest-charting single.

2014-2015: Trindl’s departure and Nowhere to Run

In September 2014, it was announced that Kris Trindl had left the project. After a public and tumultuous split, involving a lawsuit, counter-suit, and settlement, Krewella released their first single following Trindl's departure, "Say Goodbye", that November.

In March 2015, the duo released the track "Somewhere to Run". That August, they were featured on the track "Love Song to the Earth" alongside Paul McCartney, Jon Bon Jovi, Sheryl Crow, Fergie, Colbie Caillat, Natasha Bedingfield, Leona Lewis, Sean Paul, Johnny Rzeznik, Angélique Kidjo, Kelsea Ballerini, Nicole Scherzinger, Christina Grimmie, Victoria Justice, and Q'orianka Kilcher.

2016: Ammunition

In April 2016, Krewella released "Beggars" (With Diskord), followed by "Broken Record" on May 10. Ammunition, their third EP, was released on May 20, 2016. The EP peaked at number two on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums chart. A week after the EP’s release, Krewella was featured on the single "Superstar" by Pegboard Nerds and NGHTMRE.

2017-present: New World and Zer0

On May 10, 2017, Krewella released the single "Be There" and also announced the launch of their record label, Mixed Kids Records, on which they released "Be There". On June 8, they released the first part of their two-part EP New World and announced the New World Tour not long after. New World pt. 1 reached No. 15 on the Billboard Top Dance/Electronic Albums Chart and its lead single, "Team" (released in December 2016), reached No. 26 on the Hot Dance/Electronic Songs Chart. The EP’s title track, featuring Yellow Claw and Taylor Bennett, was released on September 18, 2017. This was followed by "Dead AF" on October 24.  "Another Round" with Pegboard Nerds was released on November 17, "Alarm" with Lookas was released on December 1, and "Ain't That Why" with R3HAB was released on December 8. At the end of the month, Krewella released the track "Angels Cry" through their fan phone line, sending a link to fans who sent a text to the number.

In January 2018, the duo released a new version of "New World" (with Yellow Claw) featuring Chinese rapper VAVA, along with an accompanying music video that was shot while they were in Beijing.

That July, they featured in season 11 of the Pakistani music television series Coke Studio. The duo were featured artists and also part of the well-received season 11 promo song "Hum Dekhenge" – a rendition of a poem written by Faiz Ahmad Faiz. "Runaway", their Coke Studio debut track, was an instant hit in Pakistan.

In January 2020, the duo released a new track called "Greenlights". "Greenlights" gave Krewella their second number one on Billboard’s Dance/Mix Show Airplay chart.
