ABOUT ROSALIA

Spanish singer and songwriter Rosalia Vila Tobella, known simply as Rosalia, took an interest in music from a young age, after discovering the back catalog of Spanish flamenco singer Camarón de la Isla. At age 16, she enrolled at the Taller de Músics where she studied for six years. She then attended the Superior School of Music of Catalonia and whilst studying there worked as a wedding and bar singer.

CAREER

2007-2016: Career beginnings

At 15, before her time at the Taller de Músics, she competed on the television show Tú Sí Que Vales, although she did not go through.

In 2012, she joined as the vocalist of the flamenco group Kejaleo. The following year, they released the album Alaire. 2013 also saw her stand-in for  Sílvia Pérez Cruz alongside  Juan "Chicuelo" Gómez at the  Panama International Film Festival to promote the Blancanieves soundtrack and at the Festival Grec de Barcelona for the contemporary dance work De Carmen. That year, she also participated in the Association of Performing Arts Professionals (APAP) Conference in New York. In 2014, Rosalia was the lead voice in the finale of the Any Espriu 2014 at the Palau de la Música. The following year, she collaborated with La Fura dels Baus on a show that premiered in Singapore. 2015 also saw her perform her album El Niño with Rocío Márquez at Primavera Sound. She also worked with clothing brand Desigual and sang the single for their campaign jingle "Last Night Was Eternal". That year, she released "Un Millón de Veces", which was part of the charity compilation album Tres Guitarras Para el Autismo. Alongside Alfredo Lagos, she was the opening act for flamenco artist Miguel Poveda at the International Music Festival of Cadaqués and at the 2016 Jerez Jazz Festival.

2016 saw Rosalia collaborate with Spanish rapper and former boyfriend C. Tangana on "Antes de Morirme," which ended up being a sleeper hit and eventually hit the  Spanish Singles Chart in 2018. It also became an international hit after it was featured on the soundtrack of the first season of the Spanish Netflix show Élite.

2016-2017: Los Ángeles

At a 2016 show at the Tablao del Carmen, a flamenco venue at the Poble Espanyol, in Barcelona, Rosalía performed to an audience that included  Raül Refree, whom she had invited to the show. Impressed with her performance, Refree began working with Rosalía on two albums. In the latter half of 2016, she signed to Universal Records and in February 2017 released her major-label debut album Los Ángeles. The album reached number nine on the Spanish albums chart and was certified gold in Spain. It launched two singles: "Catalina", released in October 2016, and "De Plata", released in August 2017. Los Ángeles won the "Album of the Year" award at the Time Out Awards and the Ruido de la Prensa Award for Best National Record, among others. It also saw Rosalía receive a nomination for  Best New Artist at the 18th Latin Grammy Awards.

To promote the album, Rosalía and Refree embarked on the Los Ángeles Tour, which began on February 11, 2017, and ran until 1 March 2018 at the Palau de la Música in Barcelona.
