Formed in Birmingham, Alabama in 2012, St. Paul and the Broken Bones is and eight-piece Southern Soul band. The band consists of of Paul Janeway (vocals), Browan Lollar (guitar), Jesse Phillips (bass), Kevin Leon (drums), Al Gamble (keys), Allen Branstetter (trumpet), Amari Ansari (saxophone), and Chad Fisher (trombone).
2012-2013: Beginnings, Greetings from St. Paul and The Broken Bones, and Half the City
Having met in the mid-2000s while playing as part of the alternative soul outfit The Secret Dangers, Paul Janeway and Jessie Phillips reconnected again in 2012. The pair met up in Ol' Elegante Studios in Birmingham to start a new project with the intention of it being their ‘last hurrah’ before moving on to other things. As they realized the potential of their new project, they invited Browan Lollar, formerly of The 400 Unit, Andrew Lee, Ben Griner, and Allen Branstetter to join them and, before they had even played a live show, they recorded their first EP, Greetings from St. Paul and The Broken Bones.
The EP soon caught the attention of several record labels and in January 2013, they began recording their first full-length album, bringing in keyboard player Al Gamble to join them. (Gamble would later become a full-time member of the band in January 2014.) That February, Traci Thomas of Thirty Tigers signed on as the band’s manager. Because the band’s horn players were still in school, the band began touring their debut EP at the weekends until the musicians graduated.
On February 18, 2014, Half the City was released under Single Lock Records. Receiving critical acclaim from many national journalistic outlets including Paste magazine, Garden and Gun, Southern Living, Rolling Stone, and NPR, the album reached number 56 on the Billboard 200.
The popularity of the album led to appearances on Late Night with David Letterman, The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Kimmel Live, Conan on TBS, Later... with Jools Holland, Late Night with Seth Meyers, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Austin City Limits, and Bluegrass Underground. The band embarked on a headline tour and also opened for The Rolling Stones for two dates on their Zip Code Tour. In addition, they performed at several festivals, including Coachella, Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, Newport Folk, Lockn' Festival, Outside Lands, North Sea Jazz, Rock En Seine, Pinkpop, Hurricane festival, Roskilde, Osheaga, and Hyde Park London.
2015-present: Sea of Noise and The Alien Coast
In May 2015, trombonist Ben Griner left the group to work on personal projects.
In June of the following year, the band performed "All I Ever Wonder" live on BBC2 from the Glastonbury Festival. Their second album Sea of Noise was released in September 2016.
In 2017, St. Paul and the Broken Bones were nominated for a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Musical Performance.
2018 brought the release of the single "Apollo", in June, and an album, Young Sick Camellia, released in September.
Their fourth studio album, The Alien Coast, is due for release on January 28, 2022. It features the singles "The Last Dance" and "3000 AD Mass".
