ABOUT GARY GULMAN

Born and raised in Peabody, Massachusetts, comedian Gary Gulman had plans to pursue a career as a certified public accountant when he graduated from Boston College in 1993, having been accepted on a football scholarship. For two years after graduating, he worked at the accounting firm Coopers & Lybrand (now PricewaterhouseCoopers) in the day and frequented the comedy clubs at night. When he found work as a substitute teacher, he continued his stand-up, often practicing his routines on his students.

CAREER

1993-2003: Career beginnings

After six years of open mics on the Boston circuit, Gulman made the decision to pursue comedy full time in 1999, moving from Peabody to Los Angeles, where he received development deals for five different shows although, ultimately, none of them were picked up a network for television.

1999 also saw Gulman in his first late-night television stand-up appearance when he featured on  The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The following year, he had his second appearance performing on the Late Show with David Letterman.

2003-2012: Touring, Last Comic Standing, and further television appearances

In 2003, Gulman was a contestant on the second season of the NBC reality-talent show Last Comic Standing, where he finished in third place behind John Heffron and Alonzo Bodden. This served as his breakthrough to mainstream audiences. He was also featured in the third season of the show the following year.

Gulman released his debut comedy album, Conversations with Inanimate Objects, in 2005. That year, he also embarked on a 30-day 20-show stand-up comedy tour with Dane Cook, Robert Kelly, Gary Gulman, and Jay Davis. The tour was recorded for the 2006 HBO series Tourgasm and followed a similar format to the Showtime/Comedy Central film and short series The Comedians of Comedy. Gulman relocated from Los Angeles to New York City in 2006 to open up more opportunities in comedy. In 2008, he hosted NESN’s Comedy All-Stars. Throughout this period, he performed stand-up on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno (2005), Jimmy Kimmel Live! (2006), Last Call with Carson Daly (2006), The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson (2007), and Conan (2011), among others.

2012-2019: Rise to National Prominence

Taped in the Wilbur Theatre in Boston, Massachusetts, Gulman released the Comedy Central special In This Economy? in 2012 and followed it with his second performance on the Late Show with David Letterman. 2014 brought more television features for him, with a guest appearance on Inside Amy Schumer, a first-time appearance on Late Night with Seth Meyers, and an appearance as the featured guest on The Pete Holmes Show. That October, he was a guest on  Jimmy Pardo's podcast Never Not Funny for the first time. (He made subsequent appearances on the show in December 2016 and in January 2019.) Pardo has mentioned Gulman alongside Brian Regan, John Mulaney, and Maria Bamford as one of the best stand-ups working today.

Gulman’s debut Netflix special, It’s About Time, was released in May 2016. The following January, he appeared on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. Gulman appeared as a fictionalized version of himself on HBO'sCrashing in 2018 and appeared in episode four of HBO's four-part special of the 2 Dope Queens podcast with Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson.

He also had three appearances on Conan – in 2015, 2015, and 2017 – and a segment from his 2017 appearance (commenting on a fake documentary on how all of the US states received their two-letter abbreviations) subsequently went viral.

2019-present: The Great Depresh

On January 1, 2019, Gulman began posting one tweet every day as a tip for any aspiring comedians, and he continues to do so. That June, he began recording The Great Depresh – an HBO comedy special, executive produced by Judd Apatow, that covers his experiences with depression, anxiety, and hospitalization. In addition to his stand-up segments, the special includes conversations with his wife Sadé, his psychiatrist Dr. Richard Friedman, and his mother Barbara. That fall, to promote the special, he was interviewed on both Conan and Late Night with Seth Meyers.
