Toledo Zoo Amp is part of the fun and joy of visiting Toledo Zoo. Much like the larger zoo, the Amp is part of the facility's commitment to providing entertainment while inspiring guests to join the efforts towards wildlife advocacy and conservation of the natural world. Your patronage helps further the Zoo’s goals to build a movement that cares for animals and creating a shared space for visitors and wildlife alike.
The Toledo Zoo’s commitment to this goal has earned it accreditation with the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA) and has made it a leader in global wildlife conservation.
The Toledo Zoo is located in Toledo, Ohio and is a member of the World Association of Zoos and Aquariums (WAZA). It houses over 10,000 individual animals covering about 720 species. It participates in over 80 species survival programs and has over 57,000 members and hosts over 1 million visitors each year.
But where did the Zoo come from and when did the Amp come to be?
It all began when the city of Toledo board believed that a zoo was needed to help make the city a tourist destination. This led to the Zoo beginning in 1900 when a woodchuck was donated by Carl Hillebrand to Peter Mettler and the Walbridge Park. By the end of this first year, the Toledo Zoo had a collection of 39 animals, which were mostly donated by outside sources. Unfortunately, the park was unprepared for these donations and was forced to use temporary housing for exhibits including ravines and boxes.
But tragedy struck the new facility when nearly their entire collection was lost when the winter housing for the animals caught fire in November 1901. This led to the zoo building their first brick buildings for housing animals in 1907. This first building, known as the Lion House, was to be the first of many.
During these early years, most animals were acquired through donations and circuses. But due to inadequate housing, animal escapes were regrettably common. But this spurred on development of the zoo to make it a better place for animals and a better experience for guests.
And it worked! By 1916, the Zoo had grown to a population of 471 animals. This led to a change in 1922 when Percy Jones, the TZS president, created the role of zoo director, aka the curator of the Toledo Zoo & Aquarium.
The first curator was Frank Skeldon, who created a plan to push the zoo towards national recognition.
One of the biggest facets of this plan was creating the outdoor Amphitheater on-site which was completed in 1936. Ever since then, the Amp has served the people of Toledo and visiting zoo-goers with excellent live shows including concerts by popular musicians, bands, and performers. Which includes the famous Summer Concert Series which, with support by Live Nation, has allowed well known acts to take over the historic site. And in 2017 alone, over 18,000 guests attended these concerts, with numbers set to grow every year and every season. Especially with upcoming shows from Matchbox Twenty, Chicago, and Barenaked Ladies to mention just a few.
But what can you expect when you visit the Amp?
First, it is just one part of the fun at Toledo Zoo & Aquarium. Guests often make concert visits part of the fun of their stay. So they can enjoy excellent music with drinks and snacks from on-site vendors right before exploring the myriad animal exhibits around.
The designers have taken great care to make sure everyone has plenty of room to enjoy the show, and that means plenty of leg and arm room or relaxing space on the lawn.
