The WWE is one of the longest running and most enduring wrestling promotions in North America. It started life as Titan Sports in 1980 and rebranded as the WWF in 1999 and then later as WWE in 2002. The organization is a massive sports and sports entertainment business that has branched out into film, football, and other ventures and has licensed its properties for use in video games and action figures.
The original promotion was founded in 1953 and is currently the largest promotion in the world with its roster divided between two primary touring groups, along with a developmental roster based in Orlando, Florida. These groups, which the WWE refers to as brands, make up shows that are available in more than 1 billion homes worldwide in 30 languages.
Like other wrestling promotions, WWE shows are not true contests, but instead entertainment-based performance theater with storyline-driven, scripted, and partially-choreographed matches. But the moves used in the ring are true tests of athleticism and can put performers at risk, which keeps the excitement fresh even for fans in the know.
Despite this, the WWE continues its reign as one of the greatest and most well known wrestling promotions in the world. With reach, fame, and notoriety that has expanded far beyond North America. In fact, many performers are well known legends south of the border, across the pond, and even as far as Japan. Many performers from these other regions keep watch on or participate in the finest WWE events.
