About Cardi B

Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar (a.k.a. Cardi B) was born on October 11, 1992 and was raised in Highbridge in the South Bronx. On the subject of her stage name, the rapper, singer, songwriter, actress, and television personality recounts that her sister's name is Hennessy (which is also the name of a brand of cognac), leading her friends growing up to call her "Barcardi" (a brand of rum), which was in turn shortened to Cardi B.

As a teen, she was a member of the Bloods gang (although she has since left and discouraged others from joining a gang), and she also attended Renaissance High School for Musical Theater & Technology. At age 19, Cardi B began working in a strip club – a move she has often discussed publicly and which she credits for helping her escape poverty and abuse, enabling her to re-enrol in school. She went on to attend Borough of Manhattan Community College, although eventually dropped out.

In 2013, Cardi B found her first taste of notoriety when videos uploaded to her Vine and Instagram pages went viral.

Career

2015–2017: Career beginnings and Breakthrough

Cardi B made her television debut on the sixth season of VH1's Love & Hip-Hop in 2015, and was soon lauded as the show's breakout star. After appearing in season seven of the show, she left to further embark upon a career in music.

In the fall of 2015, Cardi B featured alongside dancehall singer Popcaan on a remix of Jamaican singer Shaggy's single "Boom Boom". The following month, she made her music video debut with a rendition of English rapper Lady Leshurr's "Queen's Speech 4" titled "Cheap Ass Weave".

Her debut mixtape, Gangsta B*tch Music, Vol. 1, was released in March 2016, and that September she appeared on the KSR Group compilation Underestimated: The Album with the single "What a Girl Likes."

In January of the following year, Cardi B released her second mixtape, Gangsta B*tch Music, Vol. 2, and in February she was signed to Atlantic Records. Three months later, she was nominated for Best New Artist and Best Female Hip-Hop Artist at the 2017 BET Awards, and later performed at the official afterparty show.

She released her major-label debut single "Bodak Yellow" in June, and it went on to peak at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making the first solo female rapper to do so since Lauryn Hill's "Doo Wop (That Thing)" in 1998. The song stayed at number one for three consecutive weeks, and was eventually certified seven-times platinum by the RIAA, as well as earning nominations for Best Rap Performance and Best Rap Song at the 60th Grammy Awards and winning Single of the Year at the 2017 BET Hip Hop Awards.

In September and October, respectively, Cardi featured on G-Eazy's single "No Limit" (which also featured rapper A$AP Rocky, and peaked at number four on Billboard's Hot 100) and Migos' "MotorSport" (which also featured rapper Nicki Minaj, and peaked at number six on Billboard's Hot 100). With the release of these singles, Cardi B became the first female rapper to land her first three entries in the top 10 of the Hot 100, and also the first female artist to achieve the same on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart.

2018–present: Invasion of Privacy

January 2018 saw Cardi B set a record as the first female rapper ever to have five top 10 singles simultaneously on the Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart.

Her debut studio album, Invasion of Privacy, was released in April 2018 to huge success, both critically and commercially. The album debut at number one on the Billboard 200 and became the most streamed album by a female artist in a single week in Apple Music, as well as the largest on-demand audio streaming week ever for an album by a woman. At the same time, Cardi B became the first female artist to chart 13 entries simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100.

The following month, she was nominated for eight awards at the 2018 Billboard Music Awards, taking home the award for Top Rap Female Artist.

In July 2018, Cardi B became the first ever female rapper to have multiple number one singles, when the fourth single from Invasion of Privacy, "I Like It" ft. Bad Bunny and J Balvin, reached number one on the Hot 100. "Girls Like You," her collaboration with Maroon 5, also hit the top of the chart, furthering her record and also making her the sixth female artist to achieve three number-one singles on the chart during the 2010s. "I Like It" and "Girls Like You" both hit number one on the Billboard Radio Songs chart, making her the first female rapper to ever replace herself at number one on that chart.

At the 2018 MTV Video Music Awards, Cardi B received the most nominations with 12, taking home three awards, and she also tied with Drake for the most nominations at the 2018 American Music Awards, also winning three awards that night. On the 2018 Billboard Year-End Top Artists chart, Cardi B ranked fifth, while Invasion of Privacy ranked sixth. She was also mentioned on several other End of Year charts, and included on Time's annual list of the 100 most influential people in the world.

2019-present

In February 2019, at the 61st Grammy Awards, Cardi B received five nominations, including Album of the Year, Best Rap Album and Record of the Year ("I Like It"), becoming the third female rapper to be nominated for Album of the Year and the first to win Best Rap Album as a solo artist.

At the Billboard Music Awards in May 2019, she became the most awarded female rapper in the history of the awards show and also broke the record for a female artist for the most nominations in a single year, with 21 nominations.

In June 2019, she won Best Hip-Hop Artist at the BET Awards, as well as Album of the Year (Invasion of Privacy).
