Rapper Destroy Lonely was born Bobby Wardell Sandimanie III in Atlanta, Georgia on July 30, 2001. His father is rapper I-20 and he grew up freestyling, inspired by his father’s career. As a teenager, he began homeschooling until the ninth and tenth grades, when he returned to school and began abusing the drug Xanax. His struggles with substance abuse are credited as the origin of the "Destroy" part of his stage name and the "Lonely" part comes from his years spent in solitude.
2015-2019: Beginnings
Destroy Lonely began making music at the age of 14, laying down his first tracks in a recording studio at his school. His best friends, Texaco and Nezzus, became his collaborators and both produced tracks for him. His first project was a collaborative record with Nezzus titled NezzusDestroyed. His 2019 track “Bane” was his first taste of attention. In March 2019, he released his debut mixtape, Darkhorse, and his debut EP, Forever, ILY, was released that August.
2020-present: Underworld, </3, </32, and No Stylist
Underworld, Destroy Lonely’s second mixtape, was released in March 2020. This was followed by a third mixtape, </3 (alternatively Broken Hearts), that September, and a month after on October 31, 2020 he released the deluxe edition titled </3². The popularity of </3 and “Bane” drew the attention of Playboi Carti, who signed Destroy Lonely to his label Opium in early-2021.
That April, he appeared in Playboi Carti's music video for his song "Sky". A year later, in April 2022, he was announced as a performer at the Lyrical Lemonade Summer Smash. Three months later, he appeared on Ken Carson's studio album X as a featured artist. July 2022 also saw him appear on fellow Atlanta rapper Bktherula's single "Forever Pt. 2" and Rochester rapper Slump6s' album Genesis. In August 2022, Destroy Lonely released his debut studio album, No Stylist, which was followed by a headline tour. He released a deluxe edition to the album, NS+ (ULTRA), in November 2022, which included five new songs.
