Carnifex is one of deathcore's seminal bands. Never ones to shy away from the label, they have embraced the genre's dark lyrical themes and extreme metal sound to lay the groundwork for the deathcore bands that have followed in their wake and have a body of work that is the ultimate expression of deathcore.

Deathcore band Carnifex was formed in San Diego County, California in 2005. The band currently consists of founding members Scott Ian Lewis (lead vocals) and Shawn Cameron (drums), along with Cory Arford (guitars, backing vocals) and Fred Calderon (bass) – a line-up it has had since 2007.
2005-2006: Formation and early recordings
Founded in December 2005 in Fallbrook, California, Carnifex made its debut the following May with the release of a self-titled EP, which was distributed through Enclave Records. That September, Rick James and Kevin Vargas left the band, replaced by Steve McMahon on bass and Travis Whiting on guitars.
Love Lies in Ashes, the band’s next EP, was released on March 13, 2007, through Acropolisrpm Records.
2007-2008: Dead in My Arms
In the same month that they released Love Lies in Ashes, the band was signed to underground label This City Is Burning Records. March 2007 also saw current guitarist Cory Arford replace Travis Whiting, who left the band.
The band released its debut album, Dead in My Arms, in July 2007. To promote the album, the band began touring with groups such as Emmure, Whitechapel, and MyChildren MyBride, For Today, 12:08, among others. After the success of Dead in My Arms, the band was signed to Victory Records. After another line-up changed, Carnifex signed the deal with its current line-up of Fred Calderon on bass and Ryan Gudmunds in addition on lead guitar.
2008-2009: The Diseased and the Poisoned
Carnifex's second album, The Diseased and the Poisoned, was released on June 24, 2008. The album reached number 19 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart and launched the single "Adornment of the Sickened". To promote the album, the band toured over 22 countries with a wide range of bands, including The Black Dahlia Murder, Despised Icon, Obituary, Unleashed, Finntroll, Warbringer, Parkway Drive, Unearth, Architects, Whitechapel, Protest the Hero, Bleeding Through, Darkest Hour, and Impending Doom.
2009-2012: Hell Chose Me and Until I Feel Nothing
Carnifex finished recording their third full-length album, Hell Chose Me, in November 2009 and released it on February 16, 2010. That May, they embarked on a European Tour with supporting acts Veil of Maya and Suffokate, including shows in Spain, France, the UK, the Netherlands, Sweden, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Italy, and Switzerland. The tour ended at the Summerblast Festival in Trier, Germany. They also played the 2010 Summer Slaughter Tour in support of the album, and they toured with Unearth, All That Remains, and As I Lay Dying that September.
The following February, the band embarked on a full United States tour dubbed the Names Mean Nothing Tour, with support from Oceano, The Tony Danza Tapdance Extravaganza, and Within the Ruins. Their new album, Until I Feel Nothing, was released in October 2011 and hit number four on the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart.
One year later, frontman Scott Lewis announced that Carnifex would be embarking upon an indefinite hiatus, after three final shows in California.
2013-2015: Return from hiatus and Die Without Hope
On June 10, 2013, Carnifex announced that they had returned from their almost year-long hiatus and would be a part of the 2013 Impericon Never Say Die! Tour line-up. The following month, record label Nuclear Blast announced that the band had signed a record deal and would be releasing their fifth studio album Die Without Hope on March 4, 2014. The album was critically acclaimed and reached number five on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart.
In summer 2014, the band returned to touring, supporting Whitechapel and Devildriver on a massive Summer co-headliner, alongside fellow support acts Revocation, Fit For An Autopsy, and Rivers of Nihil. That November, they joined Northlane supporting Parkway Drive and Heaven Shall Burn on a European tour. March 2015 saw them on the road again, supporting Chelsea Grin on their Ashes to Ashes tour, alongside Sworn In and The Family Ruin. August 2015 saw Carnifex open for Cannibal Corpse in the Netherlands. Two months later, they embarked on the Decade of Despair tour to celebrate the band's formation 10 years previous. Within the Ruins, Lorna Shore, and The Last Ten Seconds of Life joined as support. They then toured Europe with Fallujah and Boris the Blade in support.
