Modest Mouse is a rock band that formed in 1993. The band was originally based out of Issaquah, Washington and currently calls Portland, Oregon home. The founding members were strongly influenced by Pavement, Pixies, XTC, and Talking Heads and had honed their talent with rehearsals, rearrangements, and recorded demos for about two years before signing on with indie label K Records.

Afterwards, the band released several singles and albums, but first achieved mainstream recognition with their fourth album, Good News for People Who Love Bad News. This album sold over 1.5 million copies in the US alone and hit the charts in the US Scotland, and the UK.

Since then, the band has released nothing but successful albums that have made their mark on the music charts, including We Were Dead Before the Ship Even Sank, which hit the top spot in the US and in Canada as well as earning Gold certification in both regions.

Modest Mouse Origins

The band’s origins started when founding member isaac Brook was a teenager in the early 1990s. He was employed at a family video store outside Seattle where he met bassist Eric Judy. The pair then discovered drummer Jeremiah Green who also lived near SEattle at a heavy metal show. The trio decided to make music together.

At the time, Brock made it a point to identify the band as coming from Issequah to avoid association with Seattle’s music scene and to give the band a unique identifier that fans could link to them. On top of that, the band’s early work had a suburban lyrical theme that made it stand out compared to the more prominent Seattle scene.

In 1994, the band recorded their first EP, Blue Cadet 3, Do You Connect? This was then released by K Records and followed by a single, “Broke”.

At the time, Modest Mouse was also recording music that would later become their debut album, Sad Sappy Sucker, but frequent delays shelved the album. After this, it wasn’t until 2001 when the band officially released the album. Three years later, the band then veered towards teh pop music world with many of their tours including stops at DIY/punk venues such as Speak in Tongues in Cleveland, Ohio. But what stands out about these tour stops, is that even after the band hit mainstream success, they still frequented these smaller venues.

Eventually, the band moved to Up Records and released two full-length albums and other recordings. This included 1996’s LP, “This is a Long Drive for Someone with Nothing to Think About. The band’s fame continued to grow at a steady pace until the release of The Lonesome Crowded West, which gave the band a dramatic cult following.

Ever since then, the band continued to grow and hone its talents with a fanbase that remains steady and true and often grows with every concert season.
