Childish Gambino is the musical stage name of American actor, comedian, writer, producer, director, musician, and DJ Donald Glover. Born on September 25, 1983, Glover was raised in Stone Mountain, Georgia and attended Lakeside High School and, later, DeKalb School of the Arts, where he was voted "Most Likely to Write for The Simpsons" in his high school yearbook.
Glover graduated from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts in 2006 with a degree in Dramatic Writing, and it was while he was studying at Tisch that he self-produced his debut independent mixtape The Younger I Get and began DJing under the moniker mcDJ.
2006-2010: Derrick Comedy, Community and mixtapes
After leaving university, Glover became a member of the sketch group Derrick Comedy and his work with the group caught the attention of producer David Miner, who invited him to become a writer for Tina Fey's NBC sitcom 30 Rock.
After picking the alias Childish Gambino from an online Wu-Tang Clan name generator, Glover released the mixtape Sick Boi in June 2008.
In February 2009, Glover was presented with the Writers Guild of America Award for Best Comedy Series for his work on the third season of 30 Rock.
That September, he became a household name with his role as Troy Barnes on the NBC sitcom Community, which he starred in for five seasons.
One year later, in September 2009, he released the mixtape Poindexter, followed by I Am Just a Rapper and I Am Just A Rapper 2 in January and February 2010, respectively, and Culdesac in July.
2010 also saw a variety of creative opportunities open up for Glover, as his Community character inspired the creation of Marvel's new Spider-Man Miles Morales, he performed a 30-minute set on the stand-up showcase program Comedy Central Presents, he won the Rising Comedy Star award at the Just for Laughs festival in July and was featured in Gap's 2010 holiday advertising campaign.
2011-2014: Camp and Because the Internet
EP, Glover's debut extended play, was released in March 2011, closely followed by a video for the song "Freaks and Geeks". The following month, he embarked on the IAMDONALD Tour, which was a one-man live show that consisted of rap, comedy, and video segments.
His debut televized one-hour comedy special, Weirdo, aired on Comedy Central in November. That month also saw the release of his debut studio album, Camp, which debuted at number eleven on the Billboard 200 and launched the singles "Bonfire" and "Heartbeat", which peaked at number 18 on the US Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles chart and was eventually certified gold by the RIAA.
2012 brought the release of Glover's sixth mixtape, Royalty, and also saw him score his first top 10 hit in the UK as a featured artist on British singer Leona Lewis' single "Trouble".
In 2013, it was announced that Glover had signed on with FX to create the music-themed show Atlanta, which premiered in 2015 and has since won two Golden Globe Awards (Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy and Best Actor – Television Series Musical or Comedy for Glover), and two Primetime Emmy Awards (Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series).
His second studio album, Because the Internet, was released in December 2013, debuting at number seven on the US Billboard 200 and number 12 on the Canadian Albums Chart. The album features guest appearances from Chance the Rapper, Jhené Aiko, and Azealia Banks, and launched four singles: "3005", "Crawl", "Sweatpants", and "Telegraph Ave." It received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Album and the 2015 awards and was certified gold by the RIAA. Glover was also nominated at the 2015 Grammys for Best Rap Performance for the single "3005".
In October 2014, he released a joint project - a mixtape titled STN MTN and an EP titled Kauai - that he described as the "first concept mixtape ever", continuing the story told in Camp and Because the Internet. The project launched the single "Sober".
2015-2017: Film roles and Awaken, My Love
2015 saw Glover increase his involvement in the world of film – he had a role in the science fiction horror The Lazarus Effect, he played a singer in the comedy-drama Magic Mike XXL, also performing on the soundtrack, he also had a role in Ridley Scott's science fiction The Martian, and he contributed two songs to the soundtrack of the Rocky series film Creed.
His third studio album, Awaken, My Love, was released in December 2016 to widespread critical acclaim, debuting at number five on the US Billboard 200 and at number two on the US Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It launched three singles: "Me and Your Mama", "Redbone" and "Terrified". The album was nominated for Album of the Year and Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2018 Grammy Awards, and "Redbone" also earned nominations for Record of the Year, Best R&B Song, winning the Grammy Award for Best Traditional R&B Performance.
Glover was named in Time's annual "100 Most Influential People in the World" list in April 2017, and later that summer he played Aaron Davis in the superhero film Spider-Man: Homecoming.
2018-present: This is America and continued success
Glover signed with RCA Records in January 2018, releasing his first single with the label, "This Is America", that May. The song was released at the same time that he premiered it on Saturday Night Live, where he performed dual hosting and musical duty. The single, which features background vocals from Young Thug, Slim Jxmmi of Rae Sremmurd, BlocBoy JB, Quavo and 21 Savage, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100, simultaneously becoming his first number one and top ten single in the US. It also topped the charts in Australia, Canada, and New Zealand. It was nominated in four categories at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video, and won all four awards, making him the first hip-hop artist to win Record of the Year and Song of the Year, and "This Is America" the first rap song to win these awards. The song's video also won the International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage Award for Best Cinematography in a Music Video.
In Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), Gloved served a critically-acclaimed performance starring as Lando Calrissian.
That July, he released the EP Summer Pack, which contained the first single from his upcoming album, "Summertime Magic", and the single "Feels Like Summer", which received a Grammy nomination for Best R&B Song at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards.
Glover was an uncredited featured rapper on 21 Savage's track 'Monster' from the album I Am > I Was, released in December 2018.
He wrote and starred in the musical film Guava Island, which was first exhibited at the Coachella Festival in April 2019, where he was also co-headlining the event. April also saw Glover premier a new song, "Algorythm", in partnership with PHAROS AR – a new augmented reality application for iOS and Android.
That July, Jon Favereau's CGI remake of Disney's The Lion King was released. Glover starred in the lead role as Simba, alongside Beyoncé Knowles-Carter, and also contributed the songs "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" (performed with Beyoncé, Billy Eichner and Seth Rogen) and "Hakuna Matata"(performed with Billy Eichner, Seth Rogen and JD McCrary) to the soundtrack. The film is the highest-grossing animated film of all-time, the second highest-grossing film of 2019 and seventh-highest-grossing film of all-time.
In August 2019, Glover's headline performance at the Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival drew "the biggest crowd that Outside Lands has ever had".
