Greta Van Fleet was formed by twin brothers Josh and Jake Kiszka, their younger brother Sam, and Kyle Hauck in Frankenmuth, Michigan in 2012. The rock band took its name from a fellow Frankenmuth resident Gretna Van Fleet, with her blessing.

2012-2015: Beginnings

The band recorded three songs: "Cloud Train", "Highway Tune" and "Standing On" before Hauck was forced to leave as their drummer and was replaced later that year by their friend Danny Wagner. Jake Kiszka has cited that the initial guitar riff for their song "Highway Tune" was written as early as 2010.

In February 2014, the band recorded a live EP in one take, releasing it that June. In March, the band’s song "Standing On" was featured in 2014 Chevy Equinox advertisements in the Detroit area.  "Standing On", along with "By the Riverside", "Cloud Train", "Down to the River", "Motown Funk No. 4", "Sing in the Rain", "Thunder Stomp", "Occidentalli", and "Written in Gold", is a song that the band had previously released but are currently unavailable.

2016-2017: Black Smoke Rising and From the Fires

The band performed the song "Highway Tune" live on the Showtime show Shameless in January 2016. The final recorded version of "Highway Tune" was released on iTunes on March 31, 2017 as the band's first official single. They released the music video for their debut single exclusively on Loudwire on April 18. Three days later, the band released its debut EP, Black Smoke Rising and the same day they were named as Apple Music’s Artist of the Week. That May, the band toured with The Struts.

At the Dow Event Center in Saginaw, Michigan, just minutes from their hometown, the band opened for fellow Michian native Bob Seeger on September 7, 2017. The band won Best New Artist at the Loudwire Music Awards in October 2017. October also saw the release of the single "Safari Song", which went on to top the  Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. The following month, they released a second EP, From the Fires. The eight-song double EP features the four songs from Black Smoke Rising, new recordings "Edge of Darkness" and "Talk on the Street", and covers of Sam Cooke's "A Change Is Gonna Come" and Fairport Convention's "Meet on the Ledge".

2018-2019: Anthem of the Peaceful Army

On March 4, 2018, Greta Van Fleet performed at Elton John’s  Academy Award Party at the host's personal request. He joined the band onstage for his song "Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting" and their song "You're the One". That July, they performed the single "When the Curtain Falls" on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, making their television debut. "When the Curtain Falls", the lead single from their debut album, was released on July 17, 2018 and reached number one on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart.

Anthem of the Peaceful Army, the band’s debut album, was released on October 19, 2018 and debuted at number three on the Billboard 200. That December, the band was nominated for four Grammy Awards – Best New Artist, Best Rock Performance for "Highway Tune", Best Rock Song for "Black Smoke Rising", and Best Rock Album for From the Fires, winning the latter.

January 2019 saw them appearing as a musical guest on Saturday Night Live, performing the song "Black Smoke Rising" and the second single from Anthem of the Peaceful Army "You're the One".

The band released its third single from Anthem of the Peaceful Army, "Lover, Leaver", on May 9, 2019. An out-take from the album, "Always There", was contributed to the soundtrack of the film A Million Little Pieces.

2020-present: The Battle at Garden’s Gate

A new single, "My Way, Soon", was released by the band on October 9, 2020. That December, the band announced their upcoming second studio album, The Battle at Garden’s Gate, and they released the single "Age of Machine".

The Battle at Garden’s Gate was released on April 16, 2021, debuting at number 7 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Top Hard Rock Albums and Top Rock Albums charts.
