About Katy Perry

Born Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson on October 25, 1984, Katy Perry was raised in Santa Barbara, California by born again Pentecostal pastor parents. Throughout her childhood, Perry moved across the country with her parents, attending various religious schools and camps, including Paradise Valley Christian School in Arizona and Santa Barbara Christian School in California during her elementary years. She took an interest in music from an early age, and sang at her parent's church from the age of nine. For her 13th birthday, she was given her first guitar, which she used to write and perform with. Growing up, Perry mainly listened to gospel music and, as secular music was frowned upon at home, she listened to pop by sneaking CDs from friends.

Career

1999-2006: Career beginnings

Having passed her GED in her freshman year, at the age of 15, Perry left Dos Pueblos High School to pursue a musical career. After a short-lived stint studying Italian opera at the Music Academy of the West in Santa Barbara, she caught the attention of rock artists Steve Thomas and Jennifer Knapp from Nashville, Tennessee, who invited her to move there to work on her writing and pursue her music career. Perry recorded a series of demos, before signing with Red Hill Records. She released her self-titled debut with the label, under the name Katy Hudson, in March 2001, embarking on a tour soon after. The album was a gospel record, that was critically acclaimed, but it was not a commercial success, and the label closed that December.

After her label ceased operations, Perry decided to transition to secular music, and 17, she moved to Los Angeles to work with producer Glen Ballard, writing under the name Kathryn Perry (Perry being her mother's maiden name), to avoid confusion with her previous work.

Perry signed with Ballard's record label Java, a subsidiary of The Island Def Jam Music Group, in 2004 and began work on a solo album. After Java was dropped and her record was shelved, Perry was introduced by Ballard to Tim Devine, an A&R executive at Columbia Records, who signed her as a solo artist. However, in 2006, despite having worked with several influential songwriters to produce an album, Perry was dropped from Columbia.

2007-2009: One of the Boys and breakthrough

After parting ways with Columbia, Perry's music was brought to Capitol Records, who signed her in 2007. She then set about working with producer Dr Luke, co-writing the songs "I Kissed a Girl" and "Hot n Cold" for her second album One of the Boys.

"I Kissed a Girl" was released in April 2008 and topped the US Billboard Hot 100 chart for seven consecutive weeks. Two months later, she released One of the Boys, which debuted at number nine on the US Billboard 200 and was certified platinum, launching two further top ten singles. The album also earned Perry two Grammy Award nominations.

In November 2008, Perry hosted the 2008 MTV Europe Music Awards, where she won the award for Best New Act. She also won the award for International Female Solo Artist at the 2009 Brit Awards, and returned to host the 2009 MTV Europe Music Awards in November 2009, becoming the first person to host two consecutive ceremonies of the European awards.

November 2009 also saw the release of a live album titled MTV Unplugged, which featured acoustic performances of five tracks from One of the Boys as well as one new song, "Brick by Brick", and a cover of Fountains of Wayne's "Hackensack".
