2016-2017: Career beginnings

The band released its debut single, "Taking You", on October 20, 2016. The single was shortly followed by the band’s debut EP, Only the Beginning, on November 25. The EP reached number five on the US Heatseekers Albums chart and after its release, the band embarked on the Taking You Tour. The following April, Why Don’t We released its second EP, Something Different, which reached number six on the same chart and also had a supporting tour. The band’s third EP, Why Don’t We Just, was released in June 2017 and reached number two on the Heatseekers Albums chart. That September, the band was signed to Atlantic Records. That same month, the band’s fourth EP, Invitation, was released. Once again, it reached number two on the Heatseekers Albums chart. The EP also charted on the Billboard 200 – their first entry on the chart. In November 2017, they released their first holiday EP, A Why Don’t We Christmas. In 2018, the band headlined the Invitation Tour, which began in Cincinnati on February 27 and concluded in Sydney on August 31.

2018-2019: 8 Letters and 12/12 era

Why Don’t We’s debut album, 8 Letters, was released on August 31, 2018. It debuted at number nine on the Billboard 200 and launched three singles: "Hooked", "Talk", and "8 Letters". The album was also certified platinum in Singapore. To support the album’s release, the band embarked on the 8 Letters Tour in March 2019.

Throughout 2019, the band released one single per month. "Big Plans" was January’s single, which was certified gold in the US and platinum in Canada. On Valentine's Day, the group released "Cold In LA". Their third single,  "I Don't Belong in This Club" featuring American rapper Macklemore, was released in March and was also certified gold in the US. On April 20, the group released "Don't Change", which was featured on the soundtrack album of the animated film UglyDolls. In June, they released "Come To Brazil" and in July, they released the song "I Still Do". The band’s August single is "What Am I", which was written by Ed Sheeran. On October 25, they released "Mad At You". A holiday single, "With You This Christmas", was released in November, and "Chills", their 12th and final single of the year was released on December 30, 2019. After they released the music video for the single, the band took a nine-month break.
