ABOUT JOYNER LUCAS

American rapper, singer, and songwriter Joyner Lucas was born and raised in Worcester, Massachusetts and began rapping at age 10, honing his skills whilst attending South High Community School.

CAREER

2007-2017: Early beginnings, record deal, and 508-507-2209

When he began, Lucas rapped under the moniker G-Storm, but soon changed his name to Future Joyner when he began working with his cousin Cyrus the Great in 2007. Together, they formed a group called Film Skool Rejekts and later that year released Workprint: The Greatest Mixtape of All Time. Listen to Me, Lucas’ debut solo mixtape, was released in 2011. The rapper dropped ‘Future’ from his stage name and became Joyner Lucas when Georgia rapper Future found popularity. Lucas’ 2013 mixtape, LFO’s (Low Frequency Oscillators), was his first to be released under the name Joyner Lucas. His next mixtape, Along Came Joyner, which features the critically acclaimed track "Ross Capicchioni", was released on April 5, 2015. Due to the song’s success, Lucas was featured in the 2015 BET Hip-Hop Awards Cypher. Initially, he was only meant to feature in the online-only cypher but, on the strength of his performance, he was later promoted to rap as part of the live broadcast cyphers.

On September 21, 2016, Lucas signed to Atlantic Records. The following June, he released his debut record on the label, 508-507-2209. A mixtape, it charted at number seven on the Heatseekers Albums chart on Billboard and contained the singles "I'm Sorry", "Ultrasound", "Just Like You" and "Winter Blues".

Lucas released the single "I'm Not Racist" via his YouTube channel in November 2017. The viral garnered a lot of attention from both the public and the media and became critically acclaimed. It was nominated for the Grammy Award for Best Music Video at the 61st Grammy Awards.

"Stranger Things," the first single from Angels & Demons – a joint collaborative project between Lucas and Chris Brown – was released the day after the project’s announcement on February 25, 2018. Lucas released a solo single,  "Frozen",  on April 1, followed by the second Angels & Demons single, "I Don't Die",  on May 2.

2018-2020: ADHD and Evolution

Several of Lucas’ appearances on the Australian and European legs of his I’m Kind of a Big Deal Tour were cancelled due to him suffering from laryngitis, which was announced in June 2018. The singer featured on Eminem’s single "Lucky You" from his tenth album, Kamikaze, the following month. The track was a huge hit, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving a nomination for the Best Rap Song Grammy Award at the 61st annual awards ceremony. That October, Lucas announced the release of his debut album ADHD. On October 17, a week after the announcement, he released the lead single from the album, "I Love". Eight more singles followed before ADHD was released on March 27, 2020.

Lucas’ debut EP, Evolution, was released on October 17, 2020, having been announced that August. It was preceded by two singles, "Fall Slowly" featuring Ashanti and "Snitch".

2021-present: Monterey

Lucas released the single "Ramen & OJ" with Lil Baby as the lead single from his upcoming second studio album on April 30, 2021. That summer, he also contributed the song "Shoot My Shot" to the soundtrack of Space Jam: A New Legacy.
