The Albert Ivar Goodman Theatre is located at 170 North Dearborn Street, Chicago, Illinois 60601, in the heart of the Loop. The theatre, designed by KPMB Architects and associated firms, opened in 2000 and incorporates preserved facades from the historic Harris and Selwyn Theatres. It is named in honor of trustee Albert Goodman and his mother, Edith-Marie Appleton, whose generosity enabled construction of the new complex.
The auditorium features a proscenium stage, state-of-the-art lighting and sound systems, and a seating capacity of 856. The design emphasizes intimacy while accommodating larger productions, with excellent acoustics and unobstructed views throughout the house.
Patrons enter through the main lobby on Dearborn Street, which provides access to the Albert Theatre, the smaller Owen Theatre, restrooms, a gift shop, and guest services. The atmosphere is professional yet welcoming. Concessions include a bar offering snacks, wine, beer, cocktails, mocktails, and non-alcoholic beverages. A pre-show dining program partners with nearby restaurants for special menus.
Performance start times are typically 7:30 p.m. for evening shows (7:00 p.m. for some weekday performances of A Christmas Carol) and 2:00 p.m. for matinees. Most productions include one or more 15-minute intermissions. Latecomers are seated at the house manager’s discretion, often after the first scene or during intermission, and may view the performance on a lobby monitor until seated.
The theatre maintains full accessibility, including wheelchair seating, assistive listening devices (including T-coil neck loops), and accessible restrooms. Staff are available to assist with mobility needs within the limits of their training.

The auditorium provides three primary seating areas: the main floor (Orchestra), the Balcony (Mezzanine), and Boxes. Sightlines are excellent from virtually every seat, with no major obstructions reported.
The Orchestra level comprises the main floor seating directly in front of and to the sides of the stage. Rows are numbered sequentially, with center sections offering the closest proximity to the performers. These seats provide the most immersive experience, especially for musicals and plays that benefit from proximity to the action. Legroom is generous, and the rake ensures clear views over heads in front.
The Balcony, referred to as the Mezzanine on seating charts, occupies the upper level. It offers a broad, elevated perspective of the entire stage. Sightlines remain strong, and the slightly more distant view can enhance appreciation of choreography and scenic design. The Balcony is often recommended for patrons seeking a comprehensive overview of the production.
Private Boxes are located on both the lower and upper levels. Lower Boxes sit adjacent to the Orchestra and provide an intimate, side-angle view ideal for smaller groups. Upper Boxes, positioned higher, offer a more panoramic perspective similar to the Balcony but with greater privacy and exclusivity. Boxes accommodate four to six patrons and are frequently reserved for special occasions.
The Goodman Theatre does not provide on-site parking. Patrons may use two nearby InterPark garages that offer discounted pre-paid rates:
Street parking is limited and metered. Public transportation is strongly encouraged. The theatre lies approximately one block from multiple CTA “L” lines (Red, Blue, Brown, Green, Orange, Pink, Purple) and numerous bus routes.
Patrons are expected to observe standard theatre etiquette.
No. Parking is not included with tickets. Discounted pre-paid parking is available at nearby garages, as detailed above.
The “best” seats depend on preference. Center Orchestra rows provide the most intimate experience. Central Balcony seats offer an excellent overview with strong acoustics. Lower Boxes deliver a private, close-up view. The venue’s design ensures good sightlines and sound from nearly every location.
Age-appropriateness varies by production. The annual A Christmas Carol is recommended for children aged 6 and older. Infants (babes in arms) are not permitted.
The box office is open in person Tuesdays through Sundays from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m., and by phone daily from 12:00 noon to 5:00 p.m. On performance days, the walk-up window remains open until approximately one-half hour after curtain. Performance start times are listed on individual show pages.
Outside food and beverages may not be brought into the auditorium. A full bar and concession menu, including snacks and beverages, are available for purchase inside the theatre.
