Reggae pop group Iration was formed in Santa Barbara, California in 2004, with all band members hailing from Hawaii originally. The group initially got together when they were living in Isla Vista, whilst attending UC Santa Barbara. They soon began rehearsing together and playing reggae covers at colleges such as Cal Poly SLO, Chico State, and UC Davis.
2006-2008: New Roots, No Time to Rest, and Sample This
After two years of performing together, building up a significant local following, the group released its debut EP, New Roots, in 2006. The following year, the band recorded and released its debut album, No Time to Rest. The album was a success, reaching the top spot on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart. Its lead single, "Cookie Jar", reached number one in Hawaii on 93.9 DaBeat and was featured on Fuel TV’s Triple Crown of Surfing recap.
In 2008, the band enjoyed their debut US tour, performing as support for Pepper. That October, the band released its second EP, Sample This, which debuted as the third top-selling reggae album worldwide on iTunes.
2010-2011: Time Bomb and Fresh Grounds
The band’s second album, Time Bomb, was released in March 2010. As with its predecessor, it topped the Billboard Reggae Albums Chart, selling over 36,000 copies.
In February 2011, Iration released Fresh Grounds, its third EP. The EP charted on the Billboard 200 and topped the Heatseekers Albums chart, as well as reaching number three on Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart.
2013-2015: Automatic and Hotting Up
After the release of Fresh Grounds, the band toured extensively throughout the rest of 2011 and 2012. In April 2013, it was announced that vocalist Kai Rediske had left the band, leaving Micah Pueschel as the group’s vocalist/guitarist. The band’s third album, Automatic, was released in July 2013 and topped Billboard’s Reggae Albums chart. It also charted on the Billboard 200 at number 75 and on the Independent Albums chart at number 16. The album features appearances from Cage the Elephant guitarist Lincoln Parish, who also helped produce the album.
Hotting Up, its follow-up, was released in August 2015. Once again, it topped the Billboard Reggae Albums chart and charted on the Billboard 200. The album also reached number five on the Billboard Independent Albums chart.
2016-2018: Double Up and self-titled album
Featuring stripped-back versions of songs from the band's entire catalog of music, Iration released the acoustic double album Double Up in December 2016. The album reached number two on the Billboard Reggae Albums chart.
Iration’s self-titled sixth studio album was released on May 18, 2018. It features guest appearances from fellow reggae artists J Boog, Slightly Stoopid, and Tyrone's Jacket. The album peaked on the Billboard Reggae Album chart at number two, the Independent Albums chart at number 14, and made it onto the Billboard 200.
2020-present: Coastin’
Iration’s eighth studio album, Coastin’, was announced in March 2020. The album features guest appearances from Common Kings, Eli Mac, Eric Rachmany of Rebelution and Stick Figure. To promote the album, the band was due to embark on the Coastin’ Summer Tour with support from Tribal Seeds, but they were forced to postpone due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
One year later, the band announced the release of a dub version of Coastin’ – a seven-song EP featuring dub remixes of songs from the album. The EP was released on May 7, 2021. Later that month, the band was featured on the song "Be Alright" from Collie Buddz’ album Cali Roots Riddim 2021.
