About JoJo Siwa
Joelle Joanie "JoJo" Siwa was born on May 19, 2003 in Omaha, Nebraska. She is a jazz/hip hop dancer, singer, actress, social media influencer and entrepenuer. Siwa is known for her rainbow-hued and often sequinned clothes, and for wearing trademark bright, colorful bows in her hair, which inspired a global trend among pre-teens and which she says symbolize "power, confidence, believing-ness." Jojo's mother, Jessalynn Siwa, is a professional dance instructor. Jojo currently lives in Los Angeles with her mother, her father Tom and her older brother Jayden. Her fans are known as Siwanatorz.
Siwa is known for her anti-bullying stance, epitomized by her catchphrase, #PeaceOutHaterz.
2013-2015: Career beginnings and Reality Television
In 2013, Siwa and her mother entered the second season of the reality television dance competition Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition, which aired on Lifetime. The youngest ever contestant on the programme, aged nine, Siwa was a top-five finalist, but was eventually eliminated in week nine of the competition.
The following year, she auditioned for Abby Lee Miller's ALDC dance competition team and was selected in 2015. Her selection for the team led to several appearances in season five of the Lifetime reality TV show Dance Moms as a guest dancer, and she was soon made a full-time member of the team. In season six, Siwa left the show when she was offered a contract with Nickelodeon.
In 2015, Siwa began posting daily vlogs to her YouTube channel, soon finding huge success with the pre-teen market thanks, in part, to her appearances on Abby's Ultimate Dance Competition and Dance Moms. As of 2019, her YouTube channel has over 10 million subscribers.
2016-present: Nickelodeon, Music Career and Consumer Products
In 2016, Siwa partnered with tween fashion-accessory company Claire's to manufacture her own line of bows. Around the same time, she began discussions with Nickelodeon, with whom she signed a consumer product deal that launched a doll, a beverage (JoJo’s Juice, inspired by her weekly Q&A YouTube series of the same name), a clothing line (JoJo’s Closet at Target) and her own line of slime.
The same year, she released her debut single "Boomerang", which has since been certified platinum by the RIAA.
In 2017, Nickelodeon signed Siwa to a talent deal and she has since starred alongside Nick Cannon in Nickelodeon's hit competition series Lip Sync Battle Shorties and in various Nickelodeon live-action series including School of Rock and The Thundermans, as well her her own shows JoJo’s DREAM Birthday and JoJo Siwa My World. She also has her own online animated series with Nickelodeon called The JoJo & BowBow Show Show, and had a role in Angry Birds 2.
In 2018, Siwa released her debut EP, D.R.E.A.M: The Music, which was supported by her first major concert tour in 2019, entitled D.R.E.A.M. The Tour. Her second EP, Celebrate, was released in April 2019.
Siwa has also authored several books over the years, beginning with her New York Times Best-Seller memoir JoJo's Guide to the Sweet Life: #PeaceOutHaterz.
Siwa has three Nickelodeon Kid's Choice Awards: Favorite Viral Music Artist (2017), Favorite Musical YouTube Creator (2018) and Favorite Social Music Star (2019).
