ABOUT JOYWAVE

Hailing from Rochester, New York, indie rock band Joywave was formed in 2010. Daniel Armbruster (vocals), Joseph Morinelli (guitar), and Paul Brenner (drums) had grown up together in Rochester and played together in various local bands in their youth, including The Hoodies. Not long after they formed, the trio was joined by bassist Sean Donnelly.

CAREER

2010-2013: Beginnings

In 2011, Joywave released its debut mixtape, 77777. The band followed a year later with the EP Koda Vista.

2014-2016: "Dangerous" and How Do You Feel Now?

At the same time the Joywave was forming, Armbruster had been part of an electronic music project called Big Data alongside producer Alan Wilkis. Although by this point Armbruster had left the project, they released the song "Dangerous", which he had written and contributed vocals to, on October 1, 2013, under Big Data featuring Joywave. The song hit number one on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart and number two on the Rock Airplay chart, as well as reaching the Top 10 on three more charts and the Top 30 on two others.

In March 2014, the band released the EP How Do You Feel?, featuring the singles "Tongues" (ft. KOPPS) and "Somebody New" – both of which went on to become popular, racking up over 2.5 million views each on YouTube as of November 2021. "Tongues", in particular, become a household hit when it was featured on a Google Nexus commercial and in the EA Sports football game FIFA 15.

The band’s debut album, How Do You Feel Now?, was released on April 21, 2015, in the US and June 22, 2015, in the UK. It featured the two previous singles as well as "Destruction", and "Now", which were both singles and both did well on the Billboard Alternative Airplay chart. The album reached number 25 on the Billboard Alternative Albums chart, number 34 on the Top Rock Albums chart, and number three on the Heatseekers Albums chart.

March 2016 saw the release of Swish, a compilation album that the band put together to promote the release of their single, "Destruction". The album features the single, along with eight remixed versions of the song, and also a bonus track titled "Life in a Bubble I Blew", which is a song that was cut from How Do You Feel Now?.

2017-2020: Content and Possession

Preceded by five singles - "Content", "It's a Trip!", "Shutdown", "Doubt", and "Going to a Place" – Joywave released their second studio album, Content, on July 28, 2017. The album reached number eight on the Heatseekers Albums chart.

After spending a year promoting the album, the band released the non-album single "Compromise" in June 2018, which is a previously unreleased song that they wrote around the time of How Do You Feel Now?. On July 12, 2018, the band released the single "Blastoffff", which appears in the trailer for Fortnite 5.

Joywave did not release another single for eleven months but returned with "Like a Kennedy" on June 21, 2019, alongside an announcement for their third studio album, Possessions, and the dates for their Possession Sessions tour. The album was released on March 13, 2020, and features the singles "Blastoffff", "Like a Kennedy", "Obsession", "Blank Slate", and "Half Your Age". The Possession Sessions tour was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

2021-present: Every Window is a Mirror and Cleanse

The band’s third EP, Every Window is a Mirror, was released on June 25, 2021, and features the songs "After Coffee", "Every Window Is A Mirror", "The Inversion" and "Pray For The Reboot". When the band noticed an increase in Russian streams, they released a Russian version of the title track. That October, the band released "Cyn City 2000" and announced the upcoming release of their fourth studio album, Cleanse. The album is slated for release on February 11, 2022.
