ABOUT STARSET

Hard rock band Starset was formed in Salem, Ohio in 2013 by Downplay vocalist Dustin Bates. Whilst attending Ohio University, Bates developed an interest in astronomy that was furthered as he studied electrical engineering. Bates went on to complete research for the US Air Force and teach at the International Space University. During this time, he developed the concept and fictional backstory for Starset that informs all of their work. According to the lore surrounding the group, Starset was formed as part of a public outreach initiative by The Starset Society, whose mission is to alert the public about the contents of "the Message", which the society obtained from a mysterious signal from space.

CAREER

2014-2015: Transmissions

The band’s debut album, Transmissions, was released on July 8, 2014. The release debuted at number 49 on the US Billboard 200 and reached number five on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, number 12 on the Top Alternative Albums chart, and number 16 on the Top Rock Albums chart. The album launched three singles: "My Demons," "Carnivore," and "Halo," which reached numbers 15, 16, and 16 on the Mainstream Rock charts, respectively. To further build upon the fictional back-history of the Starset Society, the band released an accompanying novel to the album, The Prox Transmissions.

2016-2018: Vessels

In January 2016, Starset announced that they were working on their second album and also that they would be embarking on a European tour with Breaking Benjamin. On October 4, 2016, Starset posted an image from a graphic novel on their social media. The image was from an 88-page graphic novel co-written by Dustin Bates and Peter David, illustrated by Mirko Colak, and produced by Marvel Comics, that acts as a tie-in to The Prox Transmissions. It was released in September 2017.

"Monster", the lead single from the band’s second album, was released on October 28, 2016, peaking at number 2 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart. The album, Vessels, was released on January 20, 2017, and peaked at number 11 on the Billboard 200, as well as reaching number two on the Top Alternative Albums chart. To promote the album’s release, the band toured with Black Satellite in the first half of 2017 and spent much of the rest of 2017 touring, including a performance at Seether's Shaun Morgan's Rise Above Fest, alongside Shinedown and Halestorm. The album’s second single, "Satellite," was released in August 2017, peaking at number 12 on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Chart.

Throughout the first half of 2018, the band continued to tour.  In April 2018, the band announced they had signed to Fearless Records. They also released a music video for the Vessels track "Ricochet," also releasing an acoustic version of the track shortly after.

An alternate version of the Vessels track "Bringing it Down" was released in August 2018 and the band announced Vessels 2.0 – a deluxe version of the album consisting of "reimagined" or acoustic versions of the album tracks, remixes, and a cover of "Love You to Death" by Type O Negative. The album was released the following month.

2019-2020: Divisions

May 2019 brought the announcement of Starset’s third studio album, along with the announcement of fall tour dates in the US. In July, the band announced that they would be touring Europe in 2020. "Manifest," the lead single from the album, was released in August 2019. The album itself, Divisions, was released on September 13, 2019. It reached number 37 on the Billboard 200 and peaked in the top 10 of the Top Hard Rock Albums, Top Alternative Albums, and Top Rock Albums charts. "Trials" was released as the album’s second single on April 7, 2020, and peaked at number eight on the Billboard Mainstream Rock Songs chart.

2021-present: Horizons

Starset released a cover of Led Zeppelin's "Kashmir" exclusively for Amazon Music in April 2021, as well as a new song, "Infected", to celebrate the two-year anniversary of the video game Arknights. Beginning that June, the band performed a series of intimate, acoustic events called AE01 Acoustic Event. In September, they released a music video for a new song from their upcoming album, named "The Breach," and also released a lyric video for "Leaving This World Behind." The following month, they released a lyric video for the song "Earthrise." Horizons, the band’s fourth studio album, was released on October 22, 2021. In promotion of the album, they began a tour of North America in November 2021 and in Europe, beginning in February 2022.
