Before she made the big time, Patti Smith started her musical journey with busking and performance art on a trip to Paris in 1969, with a return to her home in Manhattan, Patti worked as a spoken word artist on several soundtracks. As creativity radiated from Patti Smith, she continued to express herself through all forms of art from painting, writing and performing and during the early 1970's she worked on practising her gifts before focussing on her music career which exploaded later on in the same decade.
MAJOR BREAKTHROUGH AND SUCCESS
By 1974, Patti Smith was performing on stage with talented rock musicians with guitarist, bassist and rock archivist Lenny Kaye, and then with a full band set up including Kaye, along with Ivan Kral on guitar and bass, Jay Dee Daugherty on drums and Richard Sohl on Piano. Together they called themselves the Patti Smith Group and spent time building up their catalogue of songs and honing in on their sound.
Just one year later, Patti Smith broke through onto the mainstream in 1975 with her debut record, Horses and the rest is truly history. The American musician quickly became a fixture on the local New York punk rock music movement and also a perminant name in the rock charts after the release of Horses.
At the time despite it's impeccible sound and astounding experience for the listener, the album's initial success was not apparent as it took to the top 50 of the Billboard 200 charts. But the success that has followed has been out of this world and the album has since been noted by critics worldwide as one of the greatest and most influencial records of all time, known for it's classic rock and roll format merged with poetic lyrical content and a track list of pure perfection.
The record transformed the music scene at the time but has also paved the way for other artists to walk in similar footsteps from the likes of; The Smiths, R.E.M, PJ Harvey and Hole - all of which have spoken about the direct impact Patti Smith has had on their own music.
For any of her avid music fans, they will know of her second album that was released in 1976, titled Radio Ethiopia, from the album the title track became one of her dedicated fans favorite songs to date.
However nothing could prepare Patti Smith Group's major success that would follow with their third studio album, Easter. The record has been known to be one of Patti Smith's most accessible albums, with it's wide range appeal as it crosses over music genre's from her classic rock and roll sound to including elements of folk, pop and of course spoken word.
Patti Smith's career exploaded with the single release from the album "Because the Night" - co-written with the fellow rock star Bruce Springsteen. The powerful, energetic pop ballad is still considered to be Patti's Smith most well known, well recieved and biggest selling single of all time as it topped the charts back in it's release date of 1978 and since become an iconic anthem.
WAVE ALBUM AND HIATUS

Her 1979 album Wave written for more commercial appeal wasn't as successful as her previous release, however it included firm favorites such as the singles "Frederick" and "Dancing Barefoot." Dancing Barefoot was since listed in the Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Songs of All Time and is a captivating track, containing Patti Smith's undeniable poetic talents as she featured her feminism and dedicated the song to women such as Amedo Modigliani's mistress Jeanne Hébuterne who was a french artist and Modiglianli became her muse.
With an incredible four albums under her belt, Patti Smith took an on and off break from music to concentrate on her personal life during the most of the 1980's and further until 1996. As she got married and became a mother to her son Jackson and daughter Jesse, this of course became her main focus as she continued her journey and experiences in her personal life.
