CAREER

2006-2011: Early career

In 2006, at 15 years old, Teyana Taylor was credited as a photographer on Beyoncé's music video for her single "Ring the Alarm". In January of the following year, Taylor signed a record deal via Interscope Records with Pharrell Williams’ label Star Trak Entertainment. In February 2007, she appeared on an episode of  MTV's My Super Sweet Sixteen. That year, she also appeared as a dancer in the music video for Jay-Z's single, "Blue Magic".

February 2008 brought the release of Taylor’s debut single, "Google Me," which reached number 90 on the US Billboard's Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs chart. It was the lead single for her debut mixtape, From a Planet Called Harlem, which was released on August 16, 2009.

After venturing into both fashion and acting in early-2010, she was approached by Kanye West to appear on his fifth studio album, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy, and she recorded vocals for several tracks, notably "Dark Fantasy" and "Hell of a Life". She also featured on one of the GOOD Music's GOOD Friday tracks, titled "Christmas In Harlem", and a version of the track featuring rappers Cyhi the Prynce and West was released as a single in December 2010.

In 2011, she featured on the track "Party Tonight" with rappers Randyn Julius, Jim Jones, and Cam'ron.

2012-2018: GOOD Music, debut and K.T.S.E.

In January 2012, Taylor made an amicable split from Interscope and Star Trak Records. She then released an independent mixtape titled The Misunderstanding of Teyana Taylor, which was preceded by the singles  "Make Your Move" (feat. Wale) and "D.U.I." (feat. Jadakiss & Fabolous).

On June 14, 2012, she signed a joint-venture deal with Kanye West's label GOOD Music and The Island Def Jam Music Group. Taylor appears with Kanye West and R. Kelly on the track  "To the World" and with  John Legend, Cyhi the Prynce, Malik Yusef, and Travis Scott on the track "Sin City" on the GOOD Music compilation album Cruel Summer, as well as duetting with Legend on the track  "Bliss".

Taylor’s debut studio album, VII, was released on November 4, 2014. The album debuted at number 19 on the Billboard 200 and reached number one on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. It features guest appearances from Chris Brown, Fabolous, Pusha T, and Yo Gotti.

On August 25, 2015, she released a ‘90s-inspired mixtape, The Cassette Tape 1994. The following June, she released the single  "Freak On", featuring guest vocals from Chris Brown and production by DJ Mustard, as the lead single from her upcoming album. That August, at the MTV Video Music Awards, Kanye West released the world premiere of the music video for his single, "Fade", which features Taylor performing a dance routine similar to Jennifer Beals’ character in the film Flashdance. Taylor’s album, K.T.S.E. (an initialism of Keep That Same Energy), was released on June 22, 2018. It features guest appearances from Kanye West, Ty Dolla Sign, and Mykki Blanco. The album debuted at number 17 on the Billboard 200 and reached number 10 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums list. It was a critical hit and featured on several ‘Best Albums of 2018’ lists.

2020-present: The Album

In November 2019, Taylor teamed up with fellow R&B singer Kehlani to release the single "Morning". The following month, she released the track "We Got Love".

On June 19, 2020, she released her third studio album, The Album, which features guest appearances by Erykah Badu, Kehlani, Lauryn Hill, Future, Rick Ross, Quavo, and Missy Elliott. It debuted on the Billboard 200 at number eight and at number six on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.
