Formed in 1998 in Springfield, Massachusetts, All That Remains is a heavy metal band. The band’s current line-up consists of vocalist Philip Labonte, bassist Dan Egan, rhythm guitarist Mike Martin, former Diecast drummer Jason Costa, and lead guitarist Jason Richardson. Labonte is the last remaining original member of the band, but All That Remains did have a consistent line-up between 2008 and 2015.
1998-2005: Formation and first releases
All That Remains was born after former Shadows Fall vocalist Phil Labonte left the band due to “musical differences” after the release of their debut album, Somber Eyes to the Sky. Labonte had formed All That Remains with Oli Herbett, Chris and Mike Barlett, and Dan Egan as a side project, but after his departure from Shadows Fall, he decided to focus on the band full time. They released their debut album, Behind Silence and Solitude, on March 26, 2002 through Prosthetic Records. It was produced by Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewitcz, who also produced their second album, This Darkened Heart, which was released almost exactly two years later. The album featured Mike Martin on guitar and Matt Deis on bass and piano. It launched the singles "This Darkened Heart," "Tattered on My Sleeve," and "The Deepest Gray."
2006-2009: The Fall of Ideals, Overcome, and success
The Fall of Ideals, the band’s third studio album, was released on July 11, 2006. It served as the band’s breakthough, selling almost 13,000 copies in its first week and becoming their first album to hit the Billboard 200. Its lead single, "This Calling", was also the lead single from the soundtrack for Saw III. The album also featured the singles "Not Alone" and "The Air That I Breathe". That summer, the band was part of Ozzfest 2006.
In July 2007, All That Remains performed a notable show at Wacken Open Air in Wacken, Germany. That November, the band released the live DVD/CD combo All That Remains Live.
In the early part of 2008, the band embarked upon a headline tour with Chimaira and Black Tide in support and Divine Heresy and Light This City opening various shows. That summer, they performed several dates on the Vans Warped Tour. In September 2008, the band released its fourth studio album, Overcome, debuting at number 16 on the Billboard 200. It launched the singles "Two Weeks", "Chiron", "Forever In Your Hands", and "Undone". "Chiron" and "Two Weeks" were released for Rock Band as downloadable content and "Two Weeks" was also featured as a free playable download on the iPhone OS game Tap Tap Revenge 2.
The band played the 2009 Rockstar Energy Festival, performing with temporary drummer Tony Laureano (Dimmu Borgir, Nile) who filled in for Jason Costa after he broke his hand. Throughout November and December, they co-headlined the Napalm and Noise Tour with The Devil Wears Prada, and were supported by Story of the Year and Haste the Day.
2010-2011: For We Are Many
The band’s fifth studio album, For We Are Many, was released on October 12, 2010. The album peaked at number 10 on the Billboard 200 and hit the top spot on the Top Hard Rock Albums chart, as well as peaking at number seven on the Canadian Albums chart. It was preceded by the release of the title track and also launched the singles "Forever in Your Hands" and "Hold On."
2012-2013: A War You Cannot Win
In June 2012, the band announced its upcoming studio album, A War You Cannot Win. The album’s first and second singles, "Down Through the Ages" and "Stand Up", were released in August and the album itself was released on November 6, 2012, entering at number 13 on the Billboard 200. "Asking too Much" was released in March 2013, followed by the album’s final single, "What If I Was Nothing" in September 2013.
2014-2015: The Order of Things
In January 2014, the band announced the follow-up to 2012’s A War You Cannot Win and six months later they confirmed that it would be produced by Josh Wilbur, who had previously worked with Lamb of God and Gojira. That November, they digitally released the first single from the album - "No Knock" – and announced that it would be titled The Order of Things. The first official single the album, "This Probably Won't End Well," was released on January 13, 2015, and the album itself was released on February 24. It debuted at number 25 on the Billboard 200.
That September, Jeanne Sagan left the band, to be replaced by bassist Aaron Patrick, formerly of Bury Your Dead and Devildriver.
2016-2018: Madness
The band’s eighth studio album, Madness, was announced in August 2016 and released on April 28, 2017. It reached number one on Billboard’s Top Hard Rock Albums chart and number nine on the Top Rock Albums Chart. In late 2017, they toured to promote the album with Alter Bridge in support.
2018-present: Victim of the New Disease and Oli Herbert’s Death
September 2018 saw the release of the single "Fuck Love" from their upcoming studio album Victim of the New Disease and the announcement of a November release date.
On October 17, 2018, it was announced through the band’s Facebook page that lead guitarist and founding member Oli Herbert had died at the age of 44.
The band’s ninth studio album was released on November 9, 2018, and that day it was announced that Jason Richardson (formerly of Chelsea Grin and Born of Osiris) would be filling in as guitarist on their upcoming tours. Richardson was confirmed as a permanent band member on February 5, 2019.
