Mongolian folk-metal band The Hu was formed in 2016. Their music incorporates traditional Mongolian instrumentation, including the Morin khuur, the Tovshuur, and Mongolian throat singing. It is inspired by the Hunnu, an ancient Mongol/Turkic empire, known as Xiongnu in Mongolia.
In late-2018, the band released two videos to YouTube: "Yuve Yuve Yu" (28 September) and "Wolf Totem" (16 November). On 11 April 2019, "Wolf Totem" reached number one on Billboard's Hard Rock Digital Songs chart, making The Hu the first Mongolian musical act to top a Billboard chart, and it also debuted at number 22 on the Billboard Hot Rock Songs chart. "Yuve Yuve Yu" reached number seven on the Hard Rock Digital Songs chart.
The following month, the band met Mongolian President Khaltmaagiin Battulga, who congratulated the band for their accomplishments in promoting the country. Their third single, "Shoog Shoog", was released in June 2019 and throughout June and July, they embarked upon and European tour. The music video for their fourth single, "The Great Chinggis Khaan", was released on 23 August 2019.
The Gereg, the band’s debut album, was released on September 13, 2019. The band’s first North American tour took place from September 2019 through December 2019. That October, the band released a new version of "Yuve Yuve Yu", featuring new vocals by Danny Case of From Ashes to New. That was followed by a remix of "Wolf Totem", featuring Papa Roach lead vocalist Jacoby Shaddix, that December. In November 2019, The Hu was awarded the highest state award for Mongolia, the Order of Genghis Khan, for promoting Mongolian culture around the world.
On 1 May 2020, a remix of "Song of Women" featuring Lzzy Hale of Halestorm was released online. The following month, the band uploaded their COVID-19 relief effort fundraising concert on YouTube. A deluxe version of The Gereg, featuring the tracks with guest vocals by Jacoby Shaddix, From Ashes to New, and Lzzy Hale, as well as acoustic versions of three tracks, was released on July 10, 2020.
Metallica’s 30th-anniversary album, Metallica Blacklist, features The Hu’s version of "Through the Never". The song was released as a single in September 2020 and the album was released the following month. A charity single, all proceeds from the song go to The Giving Day Charity Fund.
In September and October 2021, the band embarked on The Hun Tour, which took place in North America.
