ABOUT DENZEL CURRY

A poet from childhood, Denzel Curry began rapping in the sixth grade and regularly challenged others at his local chapter of the Boys & Girls Clubs of America to rap battles. He began working on his debut studio album whilst still attending high school.

CAREER

2011-12: Career beginnings

Curry released his debut mixtape, King Remembered Underground Tape 1991–1995, in September 2011. Not long after, he became a member of rapper and producer SpaceGhostPurrp's hip hop group Raider Klan.

In January of the following year, his second mixtape, King of the Mischievous South Vol. 1 Underground Tape 1996, was released. The mixtape caught the attention of fellow rapper Earl Sweatshirt and other members of the Odd Future label. Strictly for My R.V.I.D.X.R.Z., his third mixtape, was released that May after the death of Trayvon Martin, who also lived in Carol City and went to the same high school as Denzel Curry. Curry met manager Mark Maturah in late-2012.  "Dark & Violent", featuring J. K. The Reaper and Nell, is Curry’s first single, which he released to SoundCloud under Maturah’s guidance.

2013-2014: Nostalgia 64

In 2013, Raider Klan disbanded, allowing Curry to focus on his solo career. That September, he released his debut album, Nostalgia 64, featuring guest appearances from JK the Reaper, Lil Ugly Mane, Mike G, Nell, Robb Bank$, Stephen A. Clark, and Yung Simmie, among others. The album received critical acclaim -  Pitchfork Magazine listed it as one of the top 10 albums of 2013 and Miami New Times called it "one of the best rap projects to come out of Miami in 2013".

In 2014, Curry had two collaborative features:  Deniro Farrar's track "Bow Down" (from Farrar's Rebirth EP) and Dillon Cooper's track "Eyes of the World" (from Cooper's X:XX mixtape).

2015-2016: 32 Zel/Planet Shrooms and Imperial

On June 9, 2015, Curry released his first double EP, 32 Zel/Planet Shrooms. The EP features the track "Ultimate", which went viral, serving as his breakthrough hit and amassing over 175 million streams on Spotify and 65 million views on YouTube.

In early-2016 he released the single "Flying Nimbus". His second studio album, Imperial, was released in March 2016 and re-released as a deluxe version on Spotify that October. It features guest appearances from Rick Ross, Joey Bada$$, Twelve'len, and Nell.

2017-2018: 13 and Ta13oo

In May 2017, Curry uploaded the demo tracks "Hate Government [demo]", "Equalizer [demo]", and "Zeltron 6 Billion" featuring Lil Ugly Mane to his SoundCloud account. An EP, 13, followed that June, which included the demo tracks and two new songs. He released another song, "Skywalker," that August. A remastered version of 32 Zel was released that September, which included a remix of "Ultimate" featuring Juicy J.

On February 28, 2018, Curry appeared on the song "Kristi," by artist ASAP Ferg, which also featured IDK. Another collaboration with IDK, "Uh Huh," was uploaded to YouTube that March. "Sumo," the lead single off his upcoming album, Ta13oo, was released on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 radio show that April. He followed with second and third singles "Percs" and  "Clout Cobain". Ta13oo was released in three acts: Light (on July 25), followed by Gray (on July 26), and Dark (on July 27). The album reached number 28 on the Billboard 200 and number 15 on the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart.

2019-2021: Zuu, 13lood In + 13lood Out, and Unlocked

Curry performed a cover of "Bulls on Parade" by Rage Against the Machine on Australian radio station Triple J’s Like A Version in February 2019. The cover went on to place 5th on that year's Triple J Hottest 100 countdown.

That May, he released the singles "Ricky" and "Speedboat". Zuu, his second studio album, was released on May 31, 2019, and reached number 32 on the Billboard 200 and number 19 on the Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums Chart. Curry made his late-night debut on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon that July.

A new project titled 13lood 1n + 13lood Out, featuring fellow rappers Ghostemane, Xavier Wulf, ZillaKami, and AK of The Underachievers, was released in January 2020. The following month, he released Unlocked – a collaborative EP with Kenny Beats, accompanied by a short animated film. In August, he was featured on the soundtrack to the Madden NFL 21 game, on the song "Lemonade", with Yungblud, and in October, he was featured on $NOT's track "Sangria".

Unlocked 1.5, a remix EP, was released in March 2021 and features new production from Robert Glasper, The Alchemist, Georgia Anne Muldrow, Sango, Jay Versace, Godmode, and Charlie Heat, and guest appearances from Smino, Joey Bada$$, and Benny the Butcher among others.
