Based in Los Angeles, California, indie rock band Mt. Joy was formed in 2016 and consists of members Matt Quinn (vocals, guitar), Sam Cooper (guitar), Sotiris Eliopoulos (drums), Jackie Miclau (keyboards), and Michael Byrnes (bass).
2016-2017: Beginnings
Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper initially met at high school in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and reconnected in Los Angeles, having both moved there. Their love for music brought them together and they began writing and recording with each other. The project is named after a mountain in Valley Forge National Park near where the two of them grew up.
They met bassist Michael Barnes on Craigslist and, with the help of his then-roommate producer Caleb Nelson, they recorded the single "Astrovan", releasing it in September 2016. The single was a rapid success on streaming sites and their second single, "Sheep", hit number 40 on the Billboard Adult Alternative Airplay chart. This popularity caught the attention of drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and keyboardist Jackie Miclau who soon joined the band. That year, they played Bonnaroo, Newport Folk Festival, and Lollapalooza, as well as opening for bands including The Head and the Heart, The Shins, Whitney, and The Revivalists.
The following year, the band was signed to Dualtone Records.
2018: Mt. Joy
The band spent much of 2017 recording tracks as a five-piece for their self-titled debut album, The tracks were recorded by producer Jon Gilbert at his home studio in Pasadena, California. Mt. Joy was released on March 2, 2018. "Silver Lining", a track from the album, went to number one on the Billboard Triple A charts. As of June 2020, tracks from the album have garnered more than 200 million streams on Spotify.
Once again, the band performed at several festivals in 2018, including Innings Music Festival, Shaky Knees Music Festival, ACL Fest, and Voodoo Fest. They also performed on their own North American and European headlining tours.
2019-2020: Rearrange Us
In January and February 2019, the band toured with Rainbow Kitten Surprise and then performed their own headlining tour in March and April 2019.
That summer, the band recorded its second studio album, Rearrange Us. The album was preceded by the release of the title track, followed by the singles "Every Holiday", "My Vibe", "Acrobats", "Death", and "Witness". It debuted on June 5, 2020, and charted on the Billboard 200. It also debuted at number one on Billboard's New Artist Albums and Alternative New Artist Album charts, and reached number two on the Americana/Folk Albums chart.
Throughout January, February, and March 2020, the band toured with The Lumineers.
