Ethel Cain Concerts Tickets

Introspective, melancholic Southern Gothic is Ethel Cain's forte and her music evokes a haunting, dusty world of odd characters, religion, and Americana. Described as "like Lana Del Rey’s goth sister", Cain shares Del Rey's dreamy aesthetic sensibilities and romanticization of motels and highways. A David Lynch piece made sonic - the urban wyrd.

Hayden Silas Anhedönia, known professionally as Ethel Cain, is a singer-songwriter who was born in Tallahassee, Florida and raised in Perry, Florida, the eldest of four children in a conservative Southern Baptist family. Cain’s father was a deacon and she grew up singing in the church choir. She began playing piano at eight years old, influenced by Christian music, Karen Carpenter, and the Steve Miller Band. At 12 years old, Cain came out as gay and at 16, she left the church. At 20, she publicly came out as a trans woman.

Cain’s music is inspired by gospel music, country music, classic rock, and alternative music.

2017-2019: Career Beginnings

In 2017, as she considered enrolling in the Florida State University film school, Cain began to experiment with making music on Garage Band. The music she made was choral and awash with reverb and she began releasing her works over the next year to a small following of friends and followers on Twitter and Instagram, under the names White Silas and Atlas. "Bruises", her debut single as Ethel Cain, was released in 2019. Following the single release, she opened for Canadian singer-songwriter Nichole Dollanganger on her Heart Shaped Bed tour when it reached Chicago.

That September, she released Carpet Bed – her first EP under the Ethel Cain moniker.

December 2019 saw Cain release her Golden Age EP. She also received support from emo rap artist Wicca Phase Springs Eternal (aka Adam McIlwee).

2020-2021: Inbred

In January 2020, McIlwee recommended Cain’s music to rapper Lil Aaron. At a show in Los Angeles that Lil Aaron was headlining with Edith Underground, Girlfiend, and Lil Bo Weep, Cain was invited by him to meet with the publishing company Prescription Songs, who she signed with soon after. That August she moved into a refurbished church in Richmond, Indiana, leaving Florida behind. It was there that Cain finished Inbred, her first EP with Prescription Songs. The following February, she released her debut single from the EP, "Michelle Pfeiffer" featuring Lil Aaron. The singles "Crush" and "Unpunishable" followed in March and April, respectively. Inbred was released on April 23, 2021.

2022-present: Preacher’s Daughter

"Gibson Girl", Cain’s lead single from her debut album, Preacher’s Daughter, was released on March 17, 2022, the same day that the album was announced. The record itself was released on May 17, 2022, preceded by the singles "Strangers" on April 7 and "American Teenager" on April 21. The album was released via her own Daughters of Cain label.
