ABOUT VANCE JOY
Vance Joy was born James Gabriel Keogh in Melbourne, Australia. After graduating from Monash University with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Laws, Joy had the potential to be a professional Australian rules football player. In 2008 and 2009, he played for the Coburg Football Club (then known as the Coburg Tigers) as a key defender in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and won the best first-year player award in 2008. He ultimately decided, however, to concentrate on a music career.
2013: God Loves You When When You’re Dancing
Joy’s debut single, "From Afar", was released on Liberation Music on January 21, 2013, and has been certified platinum in Australia. This was followed by his debut EP, God Loves You When When You’re Dancing, which was released on March 22, 2013. "Riptide", the EP’s second single, was a huge commercial success in Australia, peaking at number six on the ARIA singles chart and earning the top spot in radio station Triple J's Hottest 100 of 2013. It hit number 30 on the Billboard Top 100 and number one on the Rock Airplay and Alternative Airplay charts, as well as reaching the top 10 on the UK Singles Chart. The song has been certified nine-times platinum in Australia and six-times platinum in the US. It is also the longest-charting song in ARIA Charts' history.
2014-2016: Dream Away Your Life
In July 2014, Joy released "Mess Is Mine", reaching number 33 on the ARIA Charts and the top 10 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay and Rock Airplay charts. The song went triple-platinum in Australia and platinum in the US.
That September, Joy released his debut studio album, Dream Your Life Away. The album peaked at number one on the Australian Albums chart, number 17 on the Billboard 200, and in the top five of the Billboard Folk Albums, Top Alternative Albums, and Top Rock Albums charts.
"Georgia" was released the next single from the album in February 2015. Three months later, Joy enjoyed a standing ovation at the Dolby Theater during the season 14 finale of American Idol when he performed "Riptide" in a live duet featuring Quentin Alexander. "Great Summer", a single from the soundtrack for Paper Towns, was released in July 2015. At the 29th Annual ARIA Awards in November 2015, Joy had six nominations and won the Best Male Artist category for Dream Your Life Away. November 2015 also saw him picked as Elvis Duran's Artist of the Month and he also performed "Riptide" on NBC's Today.
2017-2020: Nation of Two and Live at Red Rocks Amphitheatre
In July 2017, Joy released the single "Lay It All on Me", which was nominated for Song of the Year at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018. He followed in November with "Like Gold", which peaked at number 14 on the Australian charts.
January 2018 brought the release of his platinum-selling single "We're Going Home" – the third single from his forthcoming second studio album. The next month, he released "Saturday Sun", which was certified double-platinum in Australia and reached number 8 on the Billboard Alternative Airplay charts in the US. Later in February, he released "Call If You Need Me", which was the final single before the album's release. Nation of Two was released on 23 February 2018, debuting at number 1 in Australia, receiving gold certification, and winning Best Adult Contemporary Album at the ARIA Music Awards of 2018.
That September, Joy released an upbeat re-recorded version of his song "I'm with You" as a single. A live concert album of the Nation of Two World Tour, which was recorded at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Colorado, was released in November 2018.
Joy was the opening act for P!nk’s 2019 Beautiful Trauma World Tour.
2021-present: "You" and "Missing Piece"
Joy released the single "You", a collaboration with Benny Blanco and Marshmello, in January 2021.
That May, he released the single "Missing Piece", which featured on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy and has been certified platinum in Australia.
