ABOUT SPOON

Spoon is an indie rock band that was formed in Austin, Texas in 1993 by founding members Britt Daniel (vocals, guitar) and Jim Eno (drums). The band’s line-up also currently consists of Alex Fischel (keyboards, guitar), Gerardo Larios (guitar, keyboards), and Ben Trokan (bass, keyboards).

CAREER

1993-1997: Beginnings

Britt Daniel and Jim Eno met when they were both members of the band The Alien Beats. The band chose the name Spoon as a nod to 1970s German avant-garde band Can’s song of the same name.

In May 1994, the band made its first release with Nefarious, an EP released on vinyl. The following year, the band signed with Matador Records, releasing their debut LP on the label, Telephono, in April 1996.

The band’s second EP, Soft Effects, was released in January 1997 and featured a more refined sound than its predecessors.

1998-1999: Major label debut

Soft Effects drew the attention of Elektra Records, a subsidiary of Warner Music Group who were responsible for discovering the Pixies and who signed Spoon in 1998. A Series of Sneaks, the band’s second studio album, was released on Elektra in April of that year. However, the album did not sell as well as hoped and just four months after its release, Ron Lafitte (Spoon's Elektra A&R contact who had signed the band) quit his job. The band was dropped from the label that week. However, in subsequent years, the album has been recognized as unappreciated in its time and has achieved cult status. In response to Laffite’s decision to leave Elektra, the band released a humorous but angry two-song concept single titled "The Agony of Laffitte," which they released on Saddle Creek Records. The single contained the songs "The Agony of Laffitte" and "Laffitte Don't Fail Me Now".

2000-2006: Signing with Merge Records

In 2000, Spoon signed with independent record label Merge Records and released their fourth EP, Love Ways, on the label that October. The following year, the band released its third studio album, Girls Can Tell. The album received widespread critical acclaim, as did their follow-up, 2002’s Kill the Moonlight, which appeared in several end-of-year and end-of-decade ‘Best Albums’ lists. Its standout track, "The Way We Get By", featured on the television shows The O.C., Shameless, and Hustle, as well as in the films Mean Creek, The Puffy Chair, and Stranger Than Fiction. The band’s next album, Gimme Fiction, was released in 2005 and debuted at number 44 on the Billboard 200. "I Turn My Camera On" was released as a single, and has become one of the band's biggest hits to date, reaching number 31 on the Billboard Hot Singles chart.

In 2006, Spoon's Britt Daniel collaborated with Brian Reitzell to compose and arrange the soundtrack for the film Stranger Than Fiction. The soundtrack consists chiefly of music performed by Spoon, as well as a score composed by Daniel and Reitzell, plus instrumental adaptations of several tracks from Kill the Moonlight and Gimme Fiction.

2007-2012: Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Transference

Five years after the release of their last studio album, Spoon returned in July 2007 with Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga. The album reached number 10 on the Billboard 200 and number one on the Billboard Independent Albums chart. It launched the singles "The Underdog" and "Don't You Evah".

In the years between Gimme Fiction and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga, the band appeared on several late-night talk shows, including Late Show with David Letterman, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson, Last Call with Carson Daly, and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien, as well as the PBS show Austin City Limits. In October 2007, the band was the musical guest on Saturday Night Live.

In 2009, Spoon was ranked by Metacritic as its "Top overall artist of the decade", due to their consistently positive reviews. Transference, the band’s seventh studio album, was released on January 18, 2010 and debuted at number four on the Billboard 200. That month, a song from the album, "The Mystery Zone", was also chosen as the Starbucks iTunes Pick of the Week. April 2010 saw the band make a guest appearance on Conan O'Brien's The Legally Prohibited from Being Funny on Television Tour in Eugene, Oregon. In November, the band collaborated with Ray Davies of The Kinks, recording the title track on the album See My Friends.

2013-2016: They Want My Soul

In August 2014, Spoon released its eighth studio album, They Want My Soul, debuting a number four on the Billboard 200 and reaching the top three in the Billboard Top Rock Albums (number three), Top Alternative Albums (number two), and Vinyl Albums (number one) charts. The album was their first release on Loma Vista Recordings.

2017-2019: Hot Thoughts and Everything Hits at Once

Hot Thoughts, the band’s ninth studio album, was released on Matador in March 2017. It reached number 17 on the Billboard 200 and the top two on four other Billboard charts, as well as being featured on nine ‘Top Albums of 2017’ charts.

In July 2019, the band released Everything Hits at Once: The Best of Spoon. The album features many of their most popular songs, as well as a new single, "No Bullets Spent". For Record Store Day 2020, the band released a companion piece; another compilation album, but this time with its tracklisting voted for by fans, titled All the Weird Kids Up Front (Más Rolas Chidas).

2021-present: Lucifer on the Sofa

On March 12, 2021, Spoon released covers of two Tom Petty songs, "Breakdown" and "A Face in the Crowd". That October, the band announced its highly-anticipated tenth studio album, Lucifer on the Sofa, with lead single "The Hardest Cut" being released on the same day.
